    SIM Card
To perform wireless communication via GSM, the XiLog+ m ust be equipped
with a SIM card similar to the card used in a cellular phone . SIM cards are
available through a local service provider. However, please contact ADS
before ordering a SIM card . Technologies and business practices vary among
provider s; therefore, some provider’s services may not be compatible with the
    XiLog+ s ystem.
In addition, t he service provider must know the options to enable on the card
and the amount of data transfer that will occ ur over a particular time period to
ensure the card is set up correctly and the plan is administered properly. The
selected data connection type ( SMS or GPRS) for the logger determines the
options that must be enabled on the S IM card.
Warning: Do not disassemble or perform any maintenance or service
procedures on the Xi Log+ data logger beyond the scope of what is
described in this manual, except under the direct supervision of
qualified ADS personnel. Conducting unauthorized procedures will
    invalidate the warranty immediate ly.

    Deploying the XiLog+

Deploying an ADS XiLog+ logger typical ly involves the involves the
    following steps:
    1. Program ming the XiLog+
    2. Perform ing a Signal Strength Test
    3. Installing the XiLog+ at the Location
Deploy XiLog+ data loggers in a similar manner to other comparable units.
However, consider the following factors concerning GSM capabilities and
    requirements during deployment:
    • Mount the logger in an upright position, not at an angle or on its side .
    • When i nstalling the logger underground, mount the logger as close as
possible to ground level, preferably within 6 inches of the surface.
Following these guidelines will help ensure the GSM functions most
effectively. This chapter provide s detailed instructions for each step in the
    deployment process.
