    THEASTRACUBPISTOL(HODEL2.000)
    CALIBER.22SHORT
    TheAstra«Cub»,Model2000,utilizingcaliber.22Shortammunition,
    wasbuiltwithregardtothesameprinciples,bothmechanicaland
    ballistic,onwhichthefunctionofallmodelsofAstrapistolsisbased.
    Initsdesignthispistolwasdestinedforuseinpiinkingorpersonal
    defense.Inherentinthispistolarethebestconditionsforthisutili-
    zationand,whatismore,itissturdy,perfectlyadjustedandmecha-
    nicallyprecise.ThisischaracteristicofallthearmsproducedbyAstra-
    UncetayCompailla,S.A.,whichfor4Syearshasbeendedicated
    exclusivelytothemanufactureoffirearmswhichareuniversally
    accepted.Thisguaranteestheperfectionofthe«Cub»pistol,since
    itassuresthatpastexperienceswerefullyreferredtobeforeth2
    pistolwasplacedonsale.
    TheAstra«Cub»isafirearmofsemi-automatictypewithmagazine.
    Ithasanexteriorhammer,bywhichthepistolcanbeeasilycocked
    withasimplemotionof.thethumb.Thetotalweightofthepistol
    iscarefullydistributedtoassureperfectbalance,andtheshapeof
    thegripandthepositionofthetriggerbothcontributetonatural
    «pointing»andeaseinfiring.
    SAFETYFEAT~RES
    1.-Thepistolisprovidedwithathumbsafety(Figure1)solocated
    thatitiseasilyreachedbythethumbwhenthepistolisheldinthe
    righthand,makingitsimpletochangethesafetyleverfrom«safe»to
    «fire».Thissafetyactsonthetriggerwhichremainslockedtoall
    movementwhenthebodyofthesafetyisopposedtothemassof
    thetrigger,thuspreventingmovementofthetrigger.Whenthethumb
    safetyisturnedtofireposition(Figure2)thesafetybarnolonger
    blocksthetrigger,allowingmovementofthetriggerforfiring
    (Figure3).
    2.-Thepistolalsohasamagazinesafety,whichguaranteesadditional
    safetyofthearmwhenaliveroundisinthechamber,thuspermitting
    firingofthecartridgeonlywhenthemagazineisreplaced.Ineffect,
    (Figure4),themagazine,wheninplace,maintainsthepiece«a»in
    suchapositionthatnopartofitobstructsthetrigger.However,
    whenthemagazineisremoved(FigureS),thepiece«a»,through
    theactionofitsself-containedspring,engagesanotchinthetrigger.
    thuspreventinganymovementofthetriggerandoischargeofthe
    gun.Becauseofthecontactbetweenthesearandthehammer,the
    pistol.whenloadedandwiththehammercocked,cannotbedis-
    chargedinvoluntarily.Thepistolinthiswayissecureandsafeand
    evenifthehammeraccidentallyreleaseswhilecockingthereislittle
    riskthatthepistolwillfire.Tofirethepistolitisnecessarythatthe
    triggeractuallybepulled,requiringvoluntaryactiontodoso.In
    effect,whenthehammeriscocked(Figure6),itisdrawnbackon
    itsaxisfrompositionItopositionII,atthesametime,thesear,mov-

    bartobearagainstthesear,movingittopositionIII,thehammeris
    thenlaunchedforwardagainstthefiringpin.If,whenthehammer
    isinthemotionbetweenpositionIandpositionII,itshouldslip
    fromunderthethumboftheshooter,itwouldcometorestonthe
    firsttoothagainstthesear(halfcocknotch),positionIV,thereby
    renderingitsafe.

    atthelowerrighthandcorneroftheleftgrip.If,atanytime,itis
    desiredtoextractthecartridgewhichisinthechamber,itisnecessary
    tomovetheslidebackwitharapidmotion,suchaswhenthearm
    isloaded.Thismovementshouldbewithsufficientspeedsoasto
    causethecartridgetobethrownoutoftheextractionport.Note:
    Theperfectfunctionofthearm,especiallyinautomatics,depends
    finallyonthequalityofthecartridgesbeingused,whichshouldbe
    sufficientlypowerfulItomovetheslidewithenoughforcetoallow
    therecuperationforwhichitwasdesigned.Thefactory,intestfiring
    the«Cub»pistol,hasusedammunitionmanufacturedintheUnited
    States.

    Thecauseswhichcontribute(0thecorrosionandformationoffouling
    intheinteriorofthebarrelinthistypeofarmhavebeenpractically
    eliminatedintheuseofmodernammunitionofthenon-corrosive
    typeandwithlubricatedbullets.Thecontinueduseofunlubricated
    copperplatedbulletseventuallybuildsupfoulinginthegroovesof
    thebarrelandalsoleadstopossiblejammingandmisfiringandother
    malfunctioningofthepistol.Incasethebarrelhasbeenfouledby
    useofimproperammunitiontheuseofthebrush,whichissupplied
    withthepistol,andagoodgradeofsolventisrecommended.Pistols

    mmovableinthisposition.Then,holdingthepistolinthelefthand
    pointingtowardstheright,turnthebarrelaboutonequarterturn
    totheright,atwhichtimethebarrelwillbeloosenedfromthe
    frameandcanbedrawnforward.Then,givethebarrelanother
    quarterturntotheleft.atwhichtimeitcanberemovedentirely
    fromtheslide,Figure8.Then,byreleasingthetumbsafetythe
    slidecanbeallowedtomoveforwardandremovedfromtheframe.
    Thus,thepistolisdisassembledwithaminimumnumberofpartsto
    accountfor:Slide,barrel,recoilspringassembly,:heframeandthe
    magazine.Withthepiecessoseparateditispossibletothoroughly
    cleanthepistolwithoutfurtherdisassembly.
    Totaldisassemblyofthepartscanberealizedasfollows:
    PARTSOFTHESLIDE
    Removaloftheretainingpin,locatedverticallyonthehighpartofthe
    slidetotherearandtotheleftoftheloadingport,releassethefiring
    pinandthefiringpinspring.Removaloftheheadedretainingpin
    hichisfoundintheinteriorontheundersideoftheslidedirectly
    behindtheloadingport,permitssimpleseparationoftheextractor
    andtheextractorspring.
    PARTSOFTHEFRAME

    thegripstotheframe,afterwhichthegripscanbeverysimplyre-
    moved.Thethumbsafetyiseasilyremovedbyplacingitinahorizontal
    positiontotherear,atwhichtimethepiececanbeliftedfromthe
    frame.Byremovingtheretainingpinforthemagazinesafetythis
    piececanbeeasilyremoved,alongwithitsspring.Ifyouremove
    thetriggeraxispinandraisethetriggerbaritispossibletoremove
    fromtheframethetrIggerandtriggerbarassemblysimplybydrawing
    itcarefullytotherear.Byinsertingoneoranotheroftheaxispins
    inthesmallholedirectlyaboveandslightlytotherearofthegrip
    screwholeonthelefthandsideoftheframe,itispossibletoretain
    thehammerspring,afterwhichthehammercanbereleasedbypres-
    singonthesear.ThehammerISthenfreeofthetensIonofthehammer
    springandthehammeraxispincanbeeasilyremoved,possiblywith
    theuseofanotheraxispin,atwhichtimethehammeritselfiseasily
    separatedfromtheframe.
    ItisthenasimpleprocesstoremovetheaXISpinwhichretainsthe
    sear,afterwhichthesearandsearspringarealsoremovedfromthe
    frame.Finally,thepinwhichhasbeeninsertedtoprovisionallyretain
    thehammerspringcanberemoved,thusreleasingthehammerspring
    andthehammerspringguide.Notethatthemagazinecatchhasa
    screwdriverslot.Itisnecessaryonlytoinsertascrewdriverand
    unscrewthecatch.Thecatchandspringaretheneasilyremoved
    fromtheothersideoftheframe.Thenthecatchretainingplateis
    easilyremoved.

    Forreassemblingthepistol.tirstreplacetnehammerspringwith
    itshammerspringguideandusingalong,thinpinpunch,orsimilar,
    tool,pressthespringdownuntilaretainingpinofonetypeoranother
    canbereinsertedinthesameholewhichwasusedtoretain,the
    hammerspringfordisassembly.Then.putthehammerinplace,
    beingsurethatthehammerstrutisrestingonthespringguide.
    Afterlininguptheaxisholewiththepin,withtheproperholein
    thefra,!,e,itispossiblethentoinsertthehammeraxispin.
    Thesearisnexttobeassembledbyputtingitinitsproperplaceand
    insertingthesearretainingpin.Afterthesearan:thammerarein
    place,drawbackthehammertoengagethesearonthefirsthammer
    notch.Holdingthesearspringbyitslongestpartitispossibleto
    introducetheassemblyintoitsplaceontheframe.Withalongthin
    tool,holdingtheassemblyinplace,itispossibletolocatethetrigger
    axishole.atwhichtimethetriggerretainingpinisinserted.The
    magazinesafetyandmagazinesafetyspringarenextinserted.with
    thesafetyitselfbeingheldinposrtlonbythefingerandtheretaining
    pinholelinedupwiththeproperretainingpinholeoftheframe,
    atwhichtimethemagazinesafetyretainingpinisinsertedtohold
    thepartinitsproperposition.
    Thethumbsafetyistheninsertedwiththebodyofthesafetytothe
    rear.Themagazinecatchistheninsertedinitsproperpositionand
    itsretainingpininstalled.
    Place
    themagazinecatchretainingpinin
    position,thenfromtheothersideoftheframeinsertthemagazine
    catchwithitsspringinplaceandtightenwithscrewdriver.Thegrips
    arethenplacedinpositionandthepropergripscrewsemployed
    withascrewdriver.
