Regarding the question about keeping the blade straight during a cut. I have the model 1581VS which is the same saw but has the top handle. The blade on mine is tightened with a long, blade-type screwdriver, inserted through a small hole in the top of the handle (directly in line with the saw blade). Inserting the blade without tightening it will certainly cause the blade to wander during a cut. This may or may not be the issue with your saw, but hope it helps.

I can't keep the saw blade in a straight position. It will move in any direction if the unit is not held straight. I don't know how to keep the blade straight.
