    Basic Shooting
This chapter explains how to use the Basic Zone modes
on the Mode Dial for best results.
With Basic Zone modes, all you do is poin t and shoot while the camera sets everything automatically (p.75). Also, to prevent
botched pictures due to mistaken operations, the main
shooting function se ttings cannot be changed.

is a fully automatic mode. The camera analyzes the scene
and sets the optimum settings automatically. It also adjusts focus
automatically by detecting whether the subject is still or moving (p.61\
    ).
1Set the Mode Dial to .
Turn the Mode Dial while holding
down the lock release button at the
    center.
2Aim any AF point over the
    subject.
All the AF points will be used to focus,
and generally the closest object will
    be focused.
Aiming the center AF point over the
    subject will make focusing easier.
    3Focus the subject.
Press the shutter button halfway, and
the lens focusing ring will rotate to
    focus.
XThe AF point achieving focus flashes
briefly in red. At the same time, the
beeper will sound and the focus
confirmation light < o> in the
    viewfinder will light up.

    4Take the picture.
Press the shutter button completely to
    take the picture.
XThe captured image will be displayed
for 2 sec. on the LCD monitor.
The focus confirmation light < o> blinks and focus is not
    achieved.
Aim the AF point over an area ha ving good contrast, then press the
shutter button halfway (p.40). If you are too close to the subject,
    move away and try again.
      Multiple AF points flash simultaneously.
This indicates that focus is achiev ed at all those AF points. When the
AF point covering the desired subject flashes, take the picture.
The beeper continues to beep softly. (The focus confirmation
light < o> does not light up.)
It indicates that the camera is focusing continuously on a moving
subject. (The focus confirmation light < o> does not light up.) You
can take sharp pictures of a moving subject.
Note that focus lock (p.61) will not work in this case.
Pressing the shutter button halfw ay does not focus the subject.
If the focus mode switch on the lens is set to < MF> (manual focus),
set it to < AF> (autofocus).
    FAQ
The < A> mode makes the colors look more impressive in nature, outdoor,
and sunset scenes. If the desired color tone is not obtained, use a Creative
Zone mode and select a Pi cture Style other than and shoot (p.87).

The shutter speed display is blinking.
Since it is too dark, taking the picture may result in a blurred subject
due to camera shake. Using a tr ipod or a Canon EX-series Speedlite
    (sold separately) is recommended.
When the external flash was used, the bottom part of the
    picture came out unnaturally dark.
If a hood is attached to the lens, it can obstruct the flash coverage. If
the subject is close, detach the hood before taking the picture with
    flash.
In Basic Zone modes except < G>, using a Canon EX-series Speedlite
(sold separately) in low-lig ht or backlit conditions can capture the subject
brightly while avoiding camera sh ake or reduce backlit shadows.
