    Advanced Operations
    In Creative Zone modes, you
can set the shutter speed and/
or aperture to set the exposure
    as desired. By changing the
    camera settings, you can
    obtain various results.
The M icon on the upper right of the page title indicates
that the function can be used only in Creative Zone modes
    ( d / s / f / a/ F).
After you press the shutter button halfway and let go, the
LCD panel and viewfinder information will remain displayed
    for approx. 4 sec. ( 0).
Settable functions in Creati ve Zone modes are listed in
“Function Availability Table According to Shooting Modes”
    on page 276.

The camera automatically sets the shutter speed and aperture to suit
the subject’s brightness. This is called Program AE.
*< d> stands for Program.* AE stands for Auto Exposure.
    1Set the Mode Dial to < d>.
    2Focus the subject.
Look through the viewfinder and aim
the selected AF point over the
subject. Then press the shutter button
    halfway.
X The AF point which achieves focus
flashes in red, and the focus
confirmation light < o> in the
    viewfinder’s bottom right lights (with
    One Shot AF).
X The shutter speed and aperture will
be set automatically and displayed in
the viewfinder and on the LCD panel.
    3Check the display.
A standard exposure will be obtained
as long as the shutter speed and
    aperture display do not blink.
    4Take the picture.
Compose the shot and press the
    shutter button completely.

If the “ 30” shutter speed and the maximum aperture
    blink, it indica tes underexposure.
Increase the ISO speed or use flash.
If the “ 8000” shutter speed and the minimum aperture
    blink, it indicates overexposure.
Lower the ISO speed or use an ND filter (sold
separately) to reduce the am ount of light entering the
    lens.
Differences Between < d> and < 1> (Full Auto)With < 1>, many functions such the AF mode, drive mode, and built-in
flash are set automatically to prevent spoiled shots. The functions you can
set are limited. With < d>, only the shutter spee d and aperture are set
automatically. You can free ly set the AF mode, drive mode, built-in flash,
    and other functions (p.276).
About Program Shift In the Program AE mode , you can freely change the shutter speed and
aperture combination (P rogram) set automatically by the camera while
maintaining the same exposure. This is called Program shift.
To do this, press the shutter butto n down halfway, then turn the
dial until the desired shutter speed or aperture is displayed.
Program shift is canceled automati cally after the picture is taken.
Program shift cannot be used with flash.

In this mode, you set the shutter speed and the camera automatically
sets the aperture to obtain the standard exposure suiting the brightness
of the subject. This is called shutter- priority AE. A faster shutter speed
can freeze the action or moving subj ect. Or a slower shutter speed can
create a blurred effect, giving the impression of motion.
    * < s > stands for Time value.
    1Set the Mode Dial to < s>.
    2Set the desired shutter speed.
While looking at the LCD panel, turn
    the < 6> dial.
    3Focus the subject.
     Press the shutter button halfway.
X The aperture is set automatically.
    4Check the viewfinder display and
    shoot.
As long as the aperture is not
    blinking, the exposure will be
    standard.

If the maximum aperture blinks, it indicates
    underexposure.
Turn the < 6> dial to set a slower shutter speed until
the aperture stops blinking or set a higher ISO speed.
If the minimum aperture blinks, it indicates
    overexposure.
Turn the < 6> dial to set a faster shutter speed until
the aperture stops blinking or set a lower ISO speed.
    Shutter Speed Display
The shutter speeds from “8000” to “4” indicate the denominator of the
fractional shutter sp eed. For example, “125” indicates 1/125 sec. Also, “ 05”
    indicates 0.5 sec. and “ 15” is 15 sec.

In this mode, you set the desired aperture and the camera sets the
shutter speed automatically to obtain the standard exposure suiting the
subject brightness. This is called aperture-priority AE. A higher
f/number (smaller aperture hole) w ill make more of the foreground and
background fall within acceptable focus. On the other hand, a lower
f/number (larger aperture hole) will make less of the foreground and
    background fall within acceptable focus.
    * < f > stands for Aperture value (aperture opening).
    1Set the Mode Dial to < f>.
    2Set the desired aperture.
While looking at the LCD panel, turn
    the < 6> dial.
    3Focus the subject.

    Press the depth-of-field preview button
to stop down the lens to the current
aperture setting. You can check the
depth of field (range of acceptable focus)
    through the viewfinder.
    Depth of Field Preview N
If the “ 30” shutter speed blinks, it indicates
    underexposure.
Turn the < 6> dial to set a larg er aperture (smaller
f/number) until the blinking stops or set a higher ISO
    speed.
If the “ 8000” shutter speed blin ks, it indicates
    overexposure.
Turn the < 6> dial to set a smal ler aperture (larger
f/number) until the blinking stops or set a lower ISO
    speed.
    Aperture Display
The higher the f/number, the smaller the aperture opening will be. The
apertures displayed will differ depending on the lens. If no lens is attached to
the camera, “ 00” will be displayed for the aperture.
A higher f/number will make more of th e foreground and background fall
within acceptable focus. However, the viewfind er will look darker.
The depth-of-field effect can be clea rly seen on the Live View image as
you change the ap erture and press the depth- of-field preview button
    (p.152).
The exposure will be lo cked (AE lock) while the depth-of-field preview
    button is pressed.

You can select one of four methods to measure the subject brightness.
In Basic Zone modes, evaluative metering is set automatically.
    1Press the button. (9 )
    2Select the metering mode.
While looking at the LCD panel, turn
    the < 6> dial.
    q Evaluative metering
This is a general-purpose metering mode suited for
portraits and even backlit subjects. The camera
sets the exposure automatically to suit the scene.
    w Partial metering
Effective when the background is much brighter than
the subject due to backlighti ng, etc. Partial metering
covers approx. 6.5% of th e viewfinder area at the
    center.
    r Spot metering
This is for metering a specif ic spot of the subject or
scene. The metering is weighted at the center
covering approx. 2.8% of the viewfinder area.
    e Center-weighted average metering
The metering is weighted at the center and then
    averaged for the entire scene.

Exposure compensation can brighten (increased exposure) or darken
(decreased exposure) the standard exposure set by the camera.
Although you can set the exposure compensation up to ±5 stops in 1/3-
stop increments, the exposure co mpensation indicator on the LCD
panel and in the viewfinder can only di splay the setting up to ±3 stops. If
you want to set the exposure compensation setting beyond ±3 stops,
you should use the Quick Contro l screen (p.44) or follow the
instructions for [2 Exp. comp./AEB] on the next page.
    1Set the Mode Dial to < d>, < s>,
    or .
    2Set the exposure compensation
    amount.
      After pressing the shutter button
    halfway ( 0), turn the < 5> dial. If
    the exposure compensation cannot
    be set, press the button
below the dial (0), then turn
    the < 5> dial.
    3Take the picture.
      To cancel the exposure
    compensation, set the exposure
compensation amount back to < E>.
    Setting Exposure Compensation N
Increased exposure for a brighter image
Decreased exposure for a darker image
If the [2 Auto Lighting Optimizer] (p.101) is set to anything other than
[Disable], the image may still look bright ev en if a darker exposure has been set.
The exposure compensation amount will remain in effect even after you
set the power switch to < 2>.

Be careful not to turn the dial and change the exposure compensation
inadvertently. It is safest to set the [6 Lock 5] menu to [Enable]. Before
turning the dial, press the button (0), then turn the dial. If the amount set exceeds ±3 stop s, the end of the exposure level
    indicator will display < I> or < J>.
