Slim body of just 65 mm high, in high-grade tactile design
The AVR-550SDs body height of just 65 mm allows it to be placed almost 
anywhere without taking up a lot of space. The front panel and knobs have been
made of an aluminum material. The silver anodized aluminum finish with its 
tactile appearance, and the half-mirror display window, impart an air of elegance
that blends in harmoniously with a variety of interiors.
6-channel digital power amp with total output of 600 watts
In this slim body is packed a digital 6-channel digital power amp with as much
as 100 watts per channel. This single unit allows music lovers to enjoy 
6.1-channel surround audio from advanced sources such as DTS and Dolby
Digital. DVD surround playback is also possible, and of course, high-quality
stereo playback rivaling DENONs high-end A/V amp models is possible as well.
Full support for the latest surround formats
- Dolby Digital EX
The 6.1-channel acoustic field playback that includes the Surround Back 
channel easily realizes sound image localization immediately to the rear of the
listener, dramatically improving the spatial expressiveness and localization of
the Surround channels.
- DTS-ES
There are two DTS-ES modes: Discrete 6.1 faithfully recreates 6.1-channel signals
recorded on DVD, and Matrix 6.1 matrix-processes the Surround Left and Surround
Right channels and brings out the Surround Back channel.
- DTS 96/24
DTS 96/24 is a surround format that features 5.1-channel playback in superior
96-kHz, 24-bit sound quality.
- Dolby Virtual Speaker, to enjoy real surround effects in 2.1 or 2 channels.
Dolby Virtual Speaker lets you enjoy the surround effects of multi-speaker systems
through just 2 front speakers or 2 front speakers plus 1 Subwoofer. Since you
only need a simple speaker system, you can build a home theater system.
- Dolby Headphone, to enjoy dynamic surround sound without worrying
about people around you, such as at night
Dolby Headphone lets you enjoy the same quality of acoustic characteristics
through the left and right sides of your headphones that you would normally hear
from your speakers. This way, you can still feel like you were totally enveloped by
sound in a cinema or home theater even though it is the middle of the night and
using the speakers would disturb others. 
- Dolby Pro Logic IIx
Dolby Pro Logic IIx expands stereo and 5.1-chnannel content to produce 6.1 or
7.1 ch. (You have to use pre-output terminal when expansion to 7.1 ch.)
32-bit floating point DSP
The decoder section is equipped with the Hammer Head SHARC, the latest
32-bit floating point DSP which until now had been used in critically acclaimed
high-end A/V Surround Receivers. The high-speed processing capacity of this
DSP is ideally suited to the latest surround formats, realizing high-accuracy sur-
round decoding.Auto Surround mode
The Auto Surround mode detects the format of the incoming signal from the disc
being played and automatically selects the most appropriate surround decoder.
Multi-channel sources in Dolby Digital and DTS, formats are automatically 
decoded and played back in multi-channel surround. For 2-channel sources that
include PCM, Auto Surround mode can be configured to select either stereo
playback or multi-channel playback with Dolby Pro Logic IIx.

On-screen display
The on-screen display has been designed to make complex operations easier to
perform. Besides the set-up operations you always need to make for an A/V
Receivers, DVD operations are easily performed on-screen as well. Even begin-
ners will find the on-screen directions easy to understand.
Component video, for higher-quality video images
Video Conversion function
The Video Conversion function converts video signals connected to the video
input terminals to S-video signals, and vice versa. This function allows a single
RCA pin-plug cable or S-video cable to be connected between the Monitor
Output terminal of the AVR-550SD and the monitor or TV.

appearance. Together with the half-mirror display window, the DVD-550SD
exudes a tasteful refinement that blends in well with all kinds of interiors.
Progressive-scan circuitry, for superior picture quality
The progressive-scan circuitry with 625P output supports the high picture quality
of DVD. Video images of superior quality can be enjoyed when the DVD-550SD is
combined with a monitor that supports progressive-scan input.

CD-R/RW (MP3/WMA/JPEG/Kodak Picture CD) Playback**Discs that have been poorly finalized following recording may be only partially playable or not playable at all.
Supports Dolby Digital and DTS bit-stream output
The DVD-550SDs digital audio output supports Dolby Digital and DTS bit-stream
output. When connected to an A/V surround amp with a built-in Dolby Digital or
DTS decoder, the bit-stream output delivers real, high-quality digital surround
sound.
On-screen GUI, for easy operation
A newly-designed on-screen graphical user interface (GUI) allows users to make
settings and perform operations while viewing the screen. Screen displays can be
switched very easily among 4 languages (English, German, Spanish and French) 
A wealth of functions for full enjoyment of DVD
Besides the DVD functions that let users select a playback mode, such as multi-sound,
subtitles, or video image angles, the DVD-550SD has a number of other DVD functions
to expand the users enjoyment of DVD. One of these functions is a zoom feature that
plays a video in 2x or 4x zoom in accordance with the video image.
A wealth of playback modes
The DVD-550SD provides a variety of playback modes that includes the Resume
mode which starts play again from a point where the Stop button was pressed.
Other playback modes include Slow Play, Repeat Play (A-B, Chapter, Track,
Disc), Random Play, and Program Play.

The speaker enclosure sporting a slim design is made of extruded aluminum to
produce a solid, high-quality finish that offers a sense of presence in any 
interior. The extruded aluminum has been molded into a shape that discourages
the occurrence of stationary waves to ensure a clean, high-quality sound.

Hybrid construction for slim design and high-quality sound reproductionThe use of highly rigid aluminum of 3 mm thickness has enabled a slim design
while retaining the enclosures ability to accommodate the usual speaker 
components. In addition, an MDF material has been used above and below the
aluminum to produce a sandwiched wood panel. This novel hybrid construction
featuring metal and wood produces a high-quality sound with acoustic 
characteristics not possible with aluminum alone.
