    Thisweaponisaprecisioninstrumentwhichrequiresproper
    handlingandmaintenancetoassurethesafetyoftheuser.Atthe
    sametime,itisaruggedweapon,fullytestedineveryconceivable
    environment,andifproperlymaintained,willgivemanyyearsof
    satisfactoryservice.
    Properandsafehandlingisrequiredofallweapons.Thisis
    evenmoreimportantwhereanautomaticweaponisconcerned.
    Purchasersarepresumedtobefamiliarandexperiencedwith
    weapons,nevertheless,ensurethateveryonewhowillhandlethis
    weaponreadsandunderstandsthisprefaceandthemanualbefore
    attemptingtousetheweapon.

    2.NOMENCLATURE.Thenamesof
    thepartsofthesubmachinegun
    (figure1)shouldbelearneddur-
    inginstructionindisassemblyand
    assemblybyreferringtotheillus-
    trationsandpartslist.Generally,
    thepartsarenamedforthejob
    theydo-i.e.thetriggerguard
    actuallyguardsthetriggerfrom
    accidentalorunintentionaldis-
    charge.Adequatecleaningand
    oilingcanbeaccomplishedwith
    theweaponbrokendownintothe
    followinggroups:Receivergroup,

    doitcarefullysothatnoneof
    thepartsaredamaged.
    d.Astheweaponisdisassembl-
    ed,lineupthepartsinthe
    orderoftheirremoval.This
    procedurehelpsinassembly
    oftheweapon,whichisdone
    inreverseorderofdisassembly.
    4.PROCEDUREFORDIS-
    ASSEMBLY.
    a.Beforedisassemblingthe
    American180,makesurethat
    theweaponisCLEAR.Pull
    backonthemagazinecatch
    (figure2)andremovethemag-
    azine.Inspectthefeedblock
    andchambertoensureno
    ammunitionispresentineither.
    Allowthebolttogoforwardby
    squeezingonthetrigger.(Note:
    Topullback[retract]thebolt,
    pullbackonthebolthandleto
    itsrear-mostpositionuntilit
    stops,thenmanuallyreturnit
    forward).
    b.Detachmentoftherearstock
    isdonebypushinginondetent

    Withthetriggerreleased,pull
    thebolthandlesharplytothe
    rear.Theboltshouldbeen-
    gagedandheldbythesear.
    b.Squeezeandmaintainpress-
    ureonthetrigger.Withthe
    triggerdepressed,theboitwill
    goforward.Pullthebolttothe
    rear,thesearshouldagain
    engagetheboltwhilethetrig-
    gerisdepressed.
    c.Withthetriggerreleased,pull
    thebolthandletotherear,
    cockingtheweapon.Pushthe
    selectortotheright(automa-
    tic)position.Theboltshould
    notmoveuntilthetriggeris
    squeezed.
    d.Withtheselectorintheauto-
    maticposition,pullthebolt
    handletotherear;holdthe
    triggerback.Theboltshould
    movebackandforthfreely,
    notbeingengagedbythesear.
    e.Testthesafetywiththeselec-
    torinboththesemi-automatic
    andtheautomaticpositions.
