vUser HDP - for the user
vMaster HDP - for the system administrator, who can use
it to get access to the hard disk even if the user has
changed the user HDP
Note:There are two modes for the HDP: User only and
Master + User. The Master + Usermode requires
two HDPs and is designed for the system
administrator to input both in the same operation.
The system administrator then provides the user
HDP to the system user.

If the user HDP is forgotten, check to see if a master HDP

1. Turn off the computer.
2. Remove the DIMM cover from the bottom of the
computer.
3. Remove the backup battery. For information on how to
remove the backup battery, see“1030 Backup battery”
on page 60

After the POST ends, the password prompt does not
appear. The POP has been removed.

To enter screen blank mode, pressFn+F3. To end screen
blank mode and resume normal operation, press any key.
Standby mode:When the computer enters standby mode,
the following events occur in addition to what occurs in
screen blank mode:
vThe LCD is powered off.
vThe hard disk drive is powered off.
vThe CPU stops.

in a Windows NT system that uses NTFS format,

hibernation mode and resumes operation. The hibernation
file in the boot record on the hard disk drive is read, and

Use the following procedures as a guide in identifying and
correcting problems with the ThinkPad computer.
Note:The diagnostic tests are intended to test only IBM
products. The use of non-IBM products, prototype
cards, or modified options can lead to false
indications of errors and invalid system responses.
