    HOWSCOPESWORK
    Aslightpassesthroughandbeyondtheobjectivelens,theresultingupside
    downimageissenttotheinternallenses.Knownaserectorlenses,these
    internallensesreturntheimagetoaright-side-upposition.Finally,theocular
    lensmakesafinalenlargementofthatimageandsendsitontoyoureye.
    YourLeupoldscopewasdesigned,manufactured,andtestedtoensurethat,
    whenproperlymountedandsighted-inonyourfirearm,youwillenjoy
    exceptionalperformance.Asolidmountiscriticaltosatisfactoryperformance

    HowtoInstalltheScope
    THElOWERTHESCOPE,THEBETTER
    
    Ascopemountedclosetotherifleensurespropercheekweldonthestockfor
    astablefiringpositionandallowsforrapidtargetacquisition.Werecommend
    usingthelowestpossibleringheight.Nospecificclearanceisrequired,butthe
    scopemustclearthebolthandle,hammer(onleveractionsandhandguns),
    sights,andbarrel.
    Wheninstalled,besurethatyourscopedoesnotinterferewithfirearm
    operationanddoesnotcontactanythingexceptthemountrings.
    
    INSTALLINGTHEBASE,RINGS,ANDSCOPE
    
    Pleaserefertotheinstructionsincludedwiththebaseandringsfortheir
    properinstallationonthefirearm.
    Ifnecessary,itissafetopositiontherearmountringdirectlyontheexposed
    threadedareaneartheeyepiece,butonlyafterfocusingtheeyepiece.This
    allowsamoreforwardplacementofthescope.Seepage8formoredetails.
    
    NOTE:
    ThewindageandelevationadjustmentsonnewLeupoldscopesare
    centeredaspartoftheassemblyprocess.Ifyouaremountingascopethatwas
    previouslymountedonanotherrifle,youshouldcentertheadjustments(please
    seeCenteringWindageandElevationAdjustmentsonpage17formoredetails).
    
    NOTE:Usecare
    inmountingthe2.5x28mmScoutriflescope.Itisnecessaryto
    placethebackedgeoftherearmostringatleast
    3/4
    forwardoftheocular
    bell/tubejuncturetoavoidpossiblereticledamage.Becauseofthelongereye
    reliefofthisproduct,mountingthescopebackslightlywillnotinanywayimpair
    itsfunctionoreffectiveness.

    ESTABLISHINGEYERELIEFON
    RIFLESANDSHOTGUNS
    
    Because
    ofthesafetyconsiderationsassociatedwithpropereyerelief,leupold
    stronglyrecommendsthatyoumountyourscopeasfarforwardaspossible.
    Beyondthat,followthesesteps:
    1.Withthescopeasfarforwardinthemountsaspossible,holdtheriflein
    yournormalshootingposition.(Variablepowerscopesshouldbesetat
    thehighestmagnificationforthisprocess.)
    2.Slowlymovethescopetotherearjustuntilyoucanseeafullfield-of-view.
    3.Positionyourscopehereformaximumeyerelief.
    4.ProceedtoCOMPLETINGTHEINSTALLATION.
    NOTE:
    Toconfirmthatyourscopeismountedinthebestpossibleposition,try
    assumingvariouspositions:kneeling,seated,prone,andaimingbothuphilland
    downhill.Rememberthataiminguphilltypicallyreduceseyerelief
    Leupoldriflescopesare
    engineeredtoprovide
    agenerous3to5
    eyerelief,depending
    onthemodelandthe
    magnificationlevel.
    
    WARNING
    
    Ifascope
    ismounted
    toofartotherear,theeyepiececaninjurethe
    shootersbrow.Shootingatanuphillanglealsoincreasesthishazard
    becauseitshortensthedistancebetweenthebrowandtherearof
    thescope.Forthisreason,Leupoldscopesareengineeredtoprovide
    generouseyerelief.Therefore,whenmountingyourscope,we
    recommendpositioningitasfarforwardinthemountsaspossible
    totakefulladvantageofthisgenerouseyerelief

    Sincehandgunsaretypically
    firedfrom
    anarms-extended
    position,
    eyereliefis
    less
    ofa
    safetyissuethanwithriflescopes.However,itsstillimportanttoget
    theeye
    reliefrightforyou.

    afullfield-of-view.
    2.ProceedtoCOMPLETINGTHEINSTALLATION.
    
    Theeyereliefofhandgun
    scopesismoreforgiving
    thanthatofriflescopes
    Nevertheless,itis
    importantthattheeyerelief
    iscompatiblewith
    yourshootingstyle.
    Unlike
    riflescopes,adjustmentstotheeyepieceinhandgunscopesaffectthe
    eyereliefaswellasthereticlefocus.Turningtheeyepiececlockwiseincreases
    eyereliefandturningitcounterclockwisedecreasesit.
    COMPLETINGTHEINSTAllATION
    1.Withoutdisturbingtheoptimaleyereliefposition,rotatethescopeuntil
    theelevationadjustmentdialisatthetopofthescope.
    2.Fromafiringposition,checktobesurethattheverticalhairofthereticle
    alignswiththeverticalaxisofthefirearm.Misalignmentwillnotaffect
    accuracyatmoderatedistancesbutitcandiminishlongrangeaccuracy.
    3.Whenyouaresatisfied,tightentheringscrewsevenlyandsecurely.
    FOCUSING
    THE
    RETICLE
    Securethescopeandfirearminafirmrest.Pointthescopeatalightcolored
    backgroundobject.Withthescopeapproximatelyfourinchesfromyoureye
    thereticleshouldappearsharpandcrisp;ifitdoesnot,itisnecessarytoadjust
    thefocusbymeansoftheeyepiece.

    IfyourLeupoldscopeisoneofourmodelswithaneyepiecethathasalock
    ring,followthesesimplesteps:
    1.Grasptheeyepiecewithyourhandandbackitawayfromthelockring.
    Oncethelockringisfreefromtheeyepiece,turnitclockwiseawayfrom
    theeyepiecetokeepitoutofthewayduringtheadjustment.
    2.Ifyoutendtoholdthingsawayfromyourselftoseethemclearly(youare
    farsighted)turntheeyepiececounterclockwisebyacoupleofturns.Ifyou
    holdthingsclosetoyourselftoseethemclearly(youarenearsighted)turn
    theeyepiececlockwisebyacoupleofturns.
    3.Lookingthroughthescopewhenpointedatthesky,takeafewquick
    glancesatthereticle.Thefocusofthereticleshouldbenoticeably
    differentfromwhenyoustarted.Continuethisprocessuntilthereticle
    appearsclearandsharp.
    4.Whenyouaresatisfiedwiththeimageofthereticle,turnthelockringso
    thatitrestsfirmlyagainsttheeyepiece.
    IfyourLeupoldscopeisoneofourmodelswithoutaneyepiecelockring,
    followthesesimplesteps:
    1.Alladjustmentismadewiththeeyepiece.
    2.Lookthroughthescopewithquickglanceswhilefocusingthereticle
    image.Ifyoutendtoholdthingsawayfromyourselftoseethemclearly
    (farsighted)turntheeyepieceringcounterclockwiseuntilthereticleis
    clearandsharp.Ifyouholdthemclosetoyourselftoseethemclearly
    (nearsighted)turntheeyepieceringclockwiseuntilthereticleissharp
    andclear.
    Ifyoureyesightchanges,readjusttheeyepiece.Asweage,eyesightnormally
    changes.Youmaywanttocheckthesharpnessofthereticleonyourscope
    everyfewyearstoensureitisstilladjustedcorrectlyforyoureye.
    
    NOTE:
    ToprotecttheintegrityofthewaterproofsealofeveryLeupoldGoldenRing
    scope,aninternalmechanismpreventstheeyepiecefromcorningoffthescope.
    Theprimaryfunctionofascopeistoaimthefirearm.Neverusethescopeasa
    substituteforbinoculars.Neverwatchanotherpersonthroughthescope.As
    always,theGoldenRuleapplies.

    USINGABORE-SIGHTINGCOLLIMATOR
    
    Tosavetimeandammunition,startoutinyourshoporgunroomwitha
    bore-sightingcollimator.Followthedirectionsincludedwiththecollimatorfor
    specificinstructionsonitsproperuse.Remember,whenpossible,itisbetterto
    maketheinitialwindageadjustmentstothemountbasebeforeusingthe
    scopeswindageadjustment.
    NOTE:Bore-sightingaloneisnotsufficienttosight-inascope.Youmustmakefinal
    adjustmentsbyshootingthefirearmusingthesameammunitionyouuseinthefield.
    
    USINGTHELEUPOLDZEROPOINT

    This
    toolfitsanyrifle,shotgun,orpistol,andhelpsyougetonthepaper
    fast,withoutbarrelspudsorbatteries.Itworkswithanyopticalsight,andcan

    TRADITIONALBORE-SIGHTING(BOLTACTIONS)
    Preliminarysighting-incanalsobe
    accomplishedbybore-sightingatthefiring
    rangeusingatargetfrom20to50yardsaway.
    1.Positionthefirearmonthebench,using
    sandbagstosteadythefirearm.
    2.Removetheboltfromthefirearm.
    3.Lookingthroughtheboreitself,move
    thefirearmtocenterthe
    bulls-eyeofthetargetinsidethebarrel,
    asshowninFigureA.
    4.Holdtheriflesteady.Withthebulls-eye
    centeredwhenviewedthroughthebore,
    makewindageandelevationadjustments
    tothescopeuntiltheverycenterofthe
    reticleisalignedwiththebulls-eyeof
    thetarget,asshowninFigureB.

    Whicheverbore-sightingmethodyouveused,thenextstepsarethesameon
    thefiringrange.Toensurereliableresults,alwaysfirefromarestedposition
    whenperformingthesesteps.(Ifyouareusinganadjustableobjectiveorside
    focusmodelscope,performanycorrectionforparallaxbeforecontinuing,as
    explainedinUnderstandingParallaxonpages24-27.)
    1.Fireashotortwo.
    2.Ifyouareseveralinchesoffcenter,makeanappropriateamountof
    adjustmenttomovethereticletothecenterofthetarget.
    3.Carefullyfireathree-shotgroup.
    4.Usethecenterofthatgroupasareferencepointforthefinaladjustments
    towindageandelevation.
    Onthesampletarget,thecenterofthegroupistwoincheslowandthree
    inchesright.Assumingyouresighting-inat100yards,youshouldmakea
    2-MOAadjustmentup,anda3-MOAadjustmentleft.Yournextthree-shot
    groupshouldbeveryclosetothecenterof
    thetarget.Tolearnaboutmakingfinal
    adjustments,proceedtotheupcomingsection

    incrementofadjustmentonthatknobis1/4-MOA.Itisthesamewithall
    Leupoldadjustmentdials.One-MOAmovesthepointofimpactat100yards
    by1inch.At100meters,itmoves29mm.
    Thelettersfoundonthewindageandelevationdialsrefertothedirection
    thatthepoint-of-impactofthebulletismovedwhenanadjustmentismade.
