    ALCD Illuminators
    Rotating the power switch toward 
    D activates the 
    standby timer and control panel backlight (LCD 
    illuminator), allowing the display to be read in the dark.
     
    After the power switch is re leased and returns to the ON 
    position, the illuminators will remain lit for six seconds 
    while the standby timer is active or until the shutter is 
    released or the power switch is rotated toward 
    D again.

    The Mode Dial
    The camera offers the modes 
    listed below.
     To  c h o o s e  a  
    mode, press the mode dial lock 
    release and rotate the mode 
    dial.
    Special Effects Modes ( 0177)
    Use special effects during shooting.
    P, S, A, and M Modes
    Select these modes for full control over camera settings.
    •P — Programmed auto  (0 48)
    • S — Shutter-priority auto  (0 49)
    • A — Aperture-priority auto  (0 50)
    • M—Manual  (0 51)
    Auto Modes
    Select these modes for simple, point-and-shoot 
    photography.
    • i Auto  (0 36) •j Auto (flash off )  (0 36)
    Scene Modes ( 041)
    The camera automatically opt imizes settings to suit the 
    selected scene.
     Match your selection to the scene being 
    photographed.
    U1 and U2 Modes ( 055)
    Store and recall customized shooting settings.
    ANon-CPU Lenses
    Non-CPU ( 0295) lenses can be used only in modes  A and  M.
     Selecting another mode when 
    a non-CPU lens is attached disables the shutter release.

    The Release Mode Dial
    To choose a release mode, press the 
    release mode dial lock release and turn 
    the release mode dial to the desired 
    setting (057).
    ModeDescription
    SSingle frame One photograph is taken each time the shutter-
    release button is pressed.
    CLContinuous low speedThe camera takes photographs at a slow rate 
    while the shutter-release button is pressed.
    CHContinuous high speedThe camera takes photographs at a fast rate while 
    the shutter-release button is pressed.
    JQuiet shutter-releaseAs for single-frame, except that camera noise is 
    reduced.
    ESelf-timer
    Take pictures with the self-timer.
    MUPMirror upRaise the mirror before taking photographs.

    DNo Battery
    When the battery is totally exhausted or no battery is inserted, the display in the viewfinder 
    will dim.
     This is normal and does  not indicate a malfunction. The viewfinder display will 
    return to normal when a fully-charged battery is inserted.
    DThe Control Panel and Viewfinder Displays
    The brightness of the control panel and viewfinder  displays varies with temperature, and the 
    response times of the displays may drop at low temperatures.
     This is normal and does not

    ATurning the Monitor Off
    To clear shooting information from the monitor, press the  R button or press the shutter-
    release button halfway.
     The monitor will turn off automatically if no operations are 
    performed for about 10 seconds.
