    Change the settings to suit your television.
    Preparation
    Turn on the television and select the appropriate video input on the
    television to suit the connections for the player.
    1Press [	, POWER] to turn on the unit.
    2Press [ACTION] to show the menus.

    Video tab.

    “TV Aspect” and press [ENTER].

    4:3 Pan&Scan
    Select if you have a regular television and to view 16:9
    software in the pan and scan style (). The menu language is set to English, but you can change

    8Press [ACTION] to end the settings.
    To return to the previous screen
    Press [RETURN].
    For your reference
    DVDs are recorded in a variety of aspect ratios and how these
    appear depend on these settings, the on-screen menu settings,
    and the television’s screen modes.
    —When connected to a regular 4:3 aspect television, use the TV
    Aspect settings described on this page.
    —When connected to a widescreen 16:9 aspect television through
    the 480P COMPONENT VIDEO OUT (progressive) terminals,
    use the on-screen menu icons (➡ page 29, “4:3 ASPECT”)
    —When connected to a widescreen 16:9 aspect television through
    the VIDEO OUT, S VIDEO OUT, or COMPONENT VIDEO OUT
    (interlace) terminals, use the television’s screen modes.
    You can also use this remote control for basic television operation.
    You may need to change the remote control code (➡ page 19).
    The optimum settings for your television may differ to those shown
    in step 7.
    You can also use the On-Screen Menu Icons to adjust picture
    quality (➡ page 28, Digital picture mode).

    Preparation
    Turn on the television and select the appropriate video input on the
    television to suit the connections for the player.
    1Press [, POWER] to turn on the unit.
    2Press [] to open the disc tray.
    3Place the disc on the disc tray.Remove TYPE 2 discs from their cartridges before use.
    4Press [] (play).The disc tray closes and play begins.
    To stop playPress [] (➡ page 13, Resume function).
    To pause play Press [] during play.
    Press [] (play) to restart play.
    Displaying the text information on discs
    	 	
    Remote control only
    You can display the disc title, artist name, and track titles on the
    television if this information is recorded on the disc.
    Press [TEXT].
    The text display is turned on and off each time you press the button.
    Some text information also scrolls across the unit’s display.
    The unit cannot display the text on some discs.
    Note
    If “” appears on the television
    The operation is prohibited by the unit or disc.
    The disc continues to rotate while the menu is displayed even after
    you finish playing an item. Press [] when you finish to preserve
    the unit’s motor and your television screen.
    Volume may be lower when playing DVDs than when playing other
    discs or during television broadcasts.
    If you turn the volume up on the television or amplifier, be sure to
    reduce the volume again before playing other sources so that a
    sudden increase in output does not occur.
    Auto power-offThe unit switches to the standby mode after about 30 minutes in the
    stop mode. You can turn this feature off if you want to (➡ page 31,
    Others — Auto Power Off).Playing CD-R and CD-RW
    This unit can play CD-DA (digital audio) and Video CD format
    audio CD-R and CD-RW that have been finalized
    upon com-
    pletion of recording.
    It may not be able to play some CD-R or CD-RW due to the
    condition of the recording.
    Finalizing is a process that enables CD-R/CD-RW players
    to play audio CD-R and CD-RW.

    When a menu screen appears on
    the television
    	 	Remote control only
    Press the numbered buttons to select an
    item.
    To select a 2-digit number
    Example: To select item 23, press [	10] ➡ [2] ➡ [3].
    When playing DVDs, you can also use the joystick [
    , , , ]
    to select items. Press [ENTER] to confirm your selection.
    Play of the selected item now begins.
    Other buttons used to operate menus
    Read the disc’s instructions for further details about operation.
    [
    ]: Shows the next menu.
    []: Shows the previous menu.
    [RETURN]: Shows the menu screen.
    [TOP MENU]: Shows the first menu screen. 	 	
    [MENU]: Shows the menu screen. 	
    DVD menus
    DVD-Video can have several menus. The menu displayed when you
    press [TOP MENU] may be different from the menu displayed when
    you press [MENU].
    BResume function
     	 	
    The position you stopped play at is recorded by the unit when “” is
    flashing on the unit’s display.
    While “” is flashing on the unit’s display, press [] (play) to start
    play from where you stopped it.
    If you are playing DVD-Video, the illustrated message also appears.
    Press [] (play) while the message is displayed and the beginning
    portions of each chapter up to the current one are played. Full play
    resumes from the point where you stopped play.
    (This feature works only within a title.)
    If you do not press [] (play), the message disappears and play
    starts from where you stopped it.
    To cancel
    Press [] until “” disappears from the unit’s display.
    Note
    The resume function does not work if the disc’s play time is not
    displayed.
    The position is cleared when the disc tray is opened.
    The unit saves the position even when you switch the unit to stand-
    by except when playing a play list (➡ page 21).
    CStarting play from a selected
    program, title, or track
     	 	
    Remote control only
    Press the numbered buttons to select the
    item.
    To select a 2-digit number
    Example: To select track 23, press [	10] ➡ [2] ➡ [3].
    Play starts from the selected item.
    Note
    This works only when stopped with some discs.
    This may not work with some discs.
    When playing DVD-Audio and you want to start play from a track in
    a different group, select the group first (➡ page 15).

    The tracks on DVD-Audio are divided into groups. How these
    groups are played differs with the disc so read the instructions that
    came with the disc for further details.
    1Press [GROUP].The group and track icons are displayed.
    2Move the joystick [
    , ] to select the
    group number and press [ENTER].
    3Move the joystick [
    , ] to select the
    track number and press [ENTER].
    The selected group and track begin to play.
    You can also select groups with the numbered buttons. Press []
    (play) to start playing the selected group.
    Selection may not be allowed in some situations.
    Playing all the groups in succession (➡ page 17)
    Playing bonus groups
    Some discs contain bonus groups. To enjoy these groups you may
    have to enter a password. Refer to the disc’s jacket.
    1. While stopped press [GROUP].
    2. Move the joystick [
    , ] to select the bonus group and press
    [ENTER].
    3. Enter the 4-digit password with the numbered buttons and press
    [ENTER].
    4. Move the joystick [
    , ] to select a track and press [ENTER] to
    start play.
    Some discs will show a menu screen for you to enter your pass-
    word. Follow the instructions on the screen.
    The bonus group can be played as many times as you like after the
    password has been entered until the disc is removed from the unit.
    Note
    If you enter the wrong password, start again from the beginning. You
    can erase a digit by pressing [CANCEL].
    CTo enjoy even higher quality
    sound—AUDIO ONLY
     	 	
    You can enjoy higher quality audio by stopping the video signal.
    Press [AUDIO ONLY].The AUDIO ONLY indicator on the main unit lights.
    AUDIO ONLY is canceled if you press the button again or turn the
    unit off. The indicator goes out.
    Note
    Video signals are output while the disc is stopped and when opera-
    tions such as searching are performed. The television screen can
    appear unusual while video signals are not being output. Numbered

    Marking places to play
    again—MARKER
    Remote control only
    You can mark specific points on a disc to return to later. This feature
    only works if the elapsed playing time of the disc is shown on the
    unit’s display.
    	 	
    1Press [MARKER].The marker icon appears.
    2Press [MARKER] at the point you want
    to mark.
    To select another marker, move the joystick [].
    
    You can mark up to 999 points.
    Press [MARKER].The marker icon appears and if the disc already has markers,
    they are displayed.
    Move the joystick [] to highlight the
    first marker, then press [MARKER] at
    the point you want to mark.
    To mark the eleventh point and beyond 
    Select the next group of 10 as follows.
    1. Move the joystick [, ] to highlight the marker pin icon.
    2. Move the joystick [
    ] to select “11–20”.
    You can select the next group of 10 when the current group is full.
    To clear the marker display
    Press [RETURN].
    To play from a marked position
    Move the joystick [, ] to select a marker number and press
    [ENTER].
    To clear a marker
    Move the joystick [, ] to select a marker number and press
    [CANCEL].
    
    You can clear existing markers, but they are restored when you
    open the disc tray or switch the unit to standby.
    Note
    All the markers added with this unit are cleared when the unit is
    switched to standby or the disc tray is opened.
    
    This feature doesn’t work while using a play list.
    The markers are ordered by time. This means that the marker
    numbers can change when you add and erase markers.

    You can select up to 32 tracks to play in the order you choose.

    Each time you move the joystick,

    Repeat steps 2, 3 and 4 to program other tracks.
    You can also select a group or track with the numbered
    buttons.
    “Total Time” tells you the total time of the programmed
    tracks.
    All the tracks on a disc are selected when you select “ALL”
    (all the tracks in the selected group with DVD-Audio).
    5Press [] (play).
    Play now begins in the programmed sequence.
    To add or change tracks
    1. Move the joystick [
    , ] to select an available item.
    2. Repeat steps 2–4 to make the changes.
    To move to the page before or after the one shown
    Press [] or [].
    To clear the programmed tracks one by one
    Move the joystick [
    , ] to select the item number (No) and press
    [CANCEL]. Alternatively, move the joystick [
    , , , ] to select
    “Clear” and press [ENTER].
    To clear the whole program
    Move the joystick [
    , , , ] to select “Clear all” and press
    [ENTER].
    The whole program is also cleared when the unit is turned off, or the
    disc tray is opened.
    To exit the program mode
    Press [PLAY MODE] while stopped until the program play screen
    disappears.
    The program is retained in memory. Numbered

    DIRECT NAVIGATOR
    When a program list is recorded on the disc, you can use it to find
    programs you want to watch and start play.
    1Press [DIRECT NAVIGATOR].
    The program list is displayed and the program currently se-
    lected plays in the background.
    Press again to clear the program list.
    2Move the joystick [, ] to select the
    program you want to watch.
    You can also select a program with the numbered buttons.
    Step 3 is unnecessary.
    To enter a 2-digit number
    Example: 17, press, [	10] ➡ [1] ➡ [7].
    3Press [] (play) or [ENTER].Play of the program that was playing in the background
    continues.
    To display information about a selected program
    1. Do steps 1 and 2 to select the program, then move the joystick
    [] to select “Contents” on the right side of the list.
    2. Press [ENTER].
    The background picture pauses. Press [ENTER] to return to the pro-
    gram list.
    If there are 6 or more programs
    Move the joystick [] while program 5 is highlighted.
    The programs not currently shown are displayed each time you
    move the joystick.
    For your reference
    Program and disc titles are displayed only if they have been
    entered.
    You cannot change program and disc titles.
