    Special Features
    Muting Your Conversation 
    During a call, you can mute your phone so the other party cannot listen to you. When 
    muting your conversation, you can hear the other party.
    Base unit: Press [MUTE]. 
    •The MUTE indicator lights.
    •“Mute” will be displayed for a few seconds.
    • To release the mute, press [MUTE] again.
    •If you press [DIGITAL SP-PHONE] or lift the handset to switch between the 
    speaker and handset, the mute will be released.
    Cordless handset: Press the soft key ( ).
    •“Mute” will be displayed for a few seconds and “  ” will flash.
    • To release the mute, press the soft key ( ) again.
    •If you press [] or [] to switch between the receiver and speaker, the mute will 
    be released.
    Temporary Tone Dialing 
    (For Rotary or Pulse Service Users) 
    Press [] (TONE) before entering access numbers which require tone dialing.
    •The dialing mode changes to tone. You can enter numbers to access an 
    answering service, electronic banking service, etc. When you hang up, the dialing 
    mode will return to pulse.
    For Call Waiting Service Users 
    Press [FLASH/CALL WAIT] if you hear a call-waiting tone while talking.
    •The first call is put on hold and you can answer the second call.
    •To return to the first caller, press [FLASH/CALL WAIT] again.
    •Call Waiting service cannot be used when the first call is put on hold or the 
    Answering System is responding to a call.
    •If this function does not operate properly, consult your telephone company for 
    details.
    Call Waiting Caller ID display 
    If you subscribe to both Caller ID and Call Waiting with 
    Caller ID services (CWID), when a second call is 
    received while talking, the second caller’s information will 
    be displayed. After you hear a call waiting tone while 
    talking, the display shows the caller’s name with the 
    phone number and “Waiting”.
    •Contact your telephone company for details about availability in your area, and to 
    verify that CWID service is activated on your telephone line.
    •The caller’s information will only be shown on the display of the unit which is on 
    the outside call.

    Using the PAUSE Button (For PBX Line/Long 
    Distance Calls)
      
    We recommend you press [REDIAL/PAUSE] on the base unit or [PAUSE/REDIAL] 
    on the cordless handset if a pause is required for dialing with a PBX or to make a 
    long distance call.
    Ex. Line access number [9] (PBX)

    •Pressing [REDIAL/PAUSE] or [PAUSE/REDIAL] once creates a 3.5 second 
    pause. This prevents misdialing when you dial after confirming the entered 
    number (p. 29, 31) or dial a stored number (p. 42).
    •Pressing [REDIAL/PAUSE] or [PAUSE/REDIAL] more than once increases the 
    length of the pause between numbers.
    Incoming Call Tone 
    During an intercom call, you can be informed of incoming calls by 2 tones.
    If you set incoming call tone to ON, this incoming call tone will be heard for as long 
    as the line is ringing. To bypass the incoming call tone, set it to OFF. To set the 
    incoming call tone to sound 2 times, set to “2”. The factory preset is “2”.
    You can set the incoming call tone on the base unit or the cordless handset 
    separately.

    FLASH Button 
    Pressing [FLASH/CALL WAIT] also allows you to use special features of your host 
    PBX such as transferring an extension call or accessing optional telephone 
    services such as call waiting. 
    •Pressing [FLASH/CALL WAIT] cancels the Temporary Tone Dialing mode or the 
    mute (p. 51).
    Selecting the flash time (use either   or  )
    The flash time depends on your telephone exchange or host PBX. 
    You can select the following flash times: “700, 600, 400, 300, 250, 110, 100 or 90 
    ms (milliseconds)”. The factory preset is “700 ms”.
    •The setting should stay at 700 ms unless pressing [FLASH/CALL WAIT] fails to 
    pick up the Call Waiting call.
    •If the unit is connected via a PBX, PBX functions (transferring a call etc.) might not 
    work correctly. Consult your PBX supplier for the correct settings.
     
    Press [CONF/FUNCTION], and follow steps 2 to 6 above, using the 
    cordless handset. Press the soft key ( ), then press [OFF].

    Automatic Answering Operation
    The Answering System allows the unit to answer calls 
    with a greeting message. Callers can then leave a 
    message. While recording, “Answering” and “
      ” 
    will flash on the base unit.
    Setting the Unit to Answer Calls 
    Press [ANSWER ON] to turn on the 
    Answering System.
    •The indicator lights and the unit announces 
    “Answer set” and the current day and time.
    •The unit will announce the remaining recording 
    time if it is less than 5 minutes. 
    •When no recording time is available, you will need to erase any unnecessary 
    messages before new messages can be recorded (p. 59). The unit can indicate 
    that memory is full in the following ways: 
    —
    “  ” will flash on the base unit and the ANSWER ON indicator will 
    flash rapidly.
    — The unit will announce “Memory full” when you press [ANSWER ON] or press 
    and hold [GREETING], and after playing back messages or recording a 
    message.
    •If you do not want the unit to answer calls, press [ANSWER ON] again to turn off 
    the Answering System. The indicator light goes out and “Answer off” is heard.
    •You can also turn on the Answering System remotely from the cordless handset 
    (p. 57) or an outside phone (p. 64).
    •
    If you subscribe to Caller ID (p. 33), Caller ID information automatically adjusts the 
    date and time when a call is received, provided you have already set the date and 
    time manually (p. 18).
    •The total recording time of all messages (greeting and incoming) is about 12 
    minutes. If messages are recorded in noisy rooms, the time may be shortened 
    by up to 3 minutes.
    •To select the caller’s recording time, see page 25.
    •A maximum of 64 messages (including the greeting message) can be 
    recorded.

    Monitoring incoming calls
    While a caller is leaving a message, you can monitor it through the base unit 
    speaker.
     •To increase the speaker volume, press []. To decrease, press [].
    To answer the call with the base unit, lift the handset off the cradle or press 
    [DIGITAL SP-PHONE]. For the cordless handset, press 
    [] or []. 
    The unit will stop recording.
    To turn the Call Monitoring feature off on the base unit
    If this feature is not required, turn it off.
    1. Press [FUNCTION/EDIT].
    2. Press
     [] at “Telephone”.
    3. Scroll to “Initial setting” by pressing [] or [], then press
     [].
    4. Scroll to “Set answering” by pressing [] or [], then press
     []. 
    5. Scroll to “Call monitoring” by pressing [] or [], then press
     [].
    6. Select “Off” by pressing [] or [].
    7. Press
     [] (Save), then press [STOP].
    • To turn this feature on, select “On” in step 6.

    Listening to Messages
    Using the Base Unit 
    If the ANSWER ON indicator and “  ” flash, 
    new messages have been recorded. 
    •If there are only old messages, “
      ” will be 
    displayed but will not flash. If there are no messages, 
    “
      ” will not be displayed.
    To play back messages
    Press [PLAYBACK].
    •The display shows the total number of recorded 
    messages.
    •The unit announces the number of new messages and 
    only new messages are played back.
    •When you have no new messages, the unit announces “No new messages. All 
    message playback” and plays back all messages.
    •During playback, the display shows the message number. 
    •At the end of the last message, “End of final message” is heard. The unit will 
    announce the remaining recording time if it is less than 5 minutes.
    •When there are no messages, the unit announces “No messages”.
    •If a call is being received during playback, the unit rings and playback stops. To 
    answer the call, lift the handset or press [DIGITAL SP-PHONE]. For playback, 
    start again from the beginning after hanging up.
    Voice Day/Time Stamp: During playback, the unit will announce the day and 
    time when each message was recorded (p. 18).

    If “   ” flashes, there are new messages. If there are only old messages or no 
    messages, “

    To play back messages
    •“   ” will not disappear after listening to messages.
    •During playback, the display shows the message number. 
    •At the end of the last message, “End of final message” is heard. The unit will 
    announce the remaining recording time if it is less than 5 minutes.
    •When there are no messages, the unit announces “No messages”.
    •If a call is being received during playback, the unit rings and playback stops. To 
    answer the call, press [] or []. For playback, start again from the beginning 
    after hanging up.

    If you do not press any buttons at the end of the last message and hear “End of final 
    message”, the cordless handset will start the following voice menu.
    “Press 4 to play back new messages. Press 5 to play back all messages.”
    •You can press buttons for other playback options (p. 58) even if the voice menu 
    has started.
    •If you do not press any button within 10 seconds after the voice menu, the 
    cordless handset will exit remote operation.
    To turn the Answering System on
    Press [8] during playback.
    To turn the Answering System off, press [0] during playback.
    1Press the soft key (  ) .
    •A beep sounds and the number of new 
    messages will be announced from the speaker, 
    and new messages will be played.
    •To switch to the receiver, press []. To switch 
    back to the speaker, press [].
    •When you have no new messages, the unit 
    announces “No new messages. All message 
    playback” and plays back all messages.
    •To play all messages, press [5].
    •If you do not press any buttons, the voice menu 
    will start (see below).

    stopping playback, the voice menu will start (p. 57).
    For Caller ID service users (p. 33)
    During playback, the display shows the name and/or number of the caller whose 
    message is being played.
    To call back the displayed number:
    Base unit: Lift the handset off the cradle or press [DIGITAL SP-PHONE] while 
    the number is displayed.
    Cordless handset: Press the soft key (
      ) while the number is displayed.
    •The unit stops playback and dials the phone number.
    •If you need to edit the phone number to call back, see page 36.
    •After listening to new incoming messages, “√” will be added to the call entries in 
    the base unit Caller List, but those of the cordless handset Caller List will still 
    remain NEW (p. 34).

    Erasing Messages
    The unit will announce the remaining recording time after playback, if it is less than 
    5 minutes. New messages cannot be recorded when:
    — “Memory full” is heard.
    — 
    “  ” is displayed on the base unit.
    — ANSWER ON indicator flashes rapidly (only when the Answering System is on).   
    Erase unnecessary messages. We recommend you erase unnecessary messages 
    after each playback.
    Erasing a specific message 
    Press [ERASE] while the message you want to erase is being played.
    •A beep will sound and the unit will continue to play the next message.
    •To end playback, press [STOP] 2 times.
    Press [ ][4] while the message you want to erase is being played.
    •A beep will sound and the unit will continue to play the next message.
    •To end remote operation, press [OFF].
    Erasing all messages
    All recorded messages, except the greeting message, can be erased at one time.
    1. Press the soft key ( ) . 
    2. Press [ ][5] to erase all messages.
    •A long beep will sound and “No messages” will be heard.
    •To end remote operation, press [OFF].
    1Press [ERASE] while the base unit is not 
    being used.
    •“To erase all messages, press ERASE again” is heard.
    2Within 10 seconds, press [ERASE] again.

    Transferring a Call to the Answering System
    When you answer a call and the caller wants to talk to someone who is not 
    available, you can transfer the caller to the Answering System, where the caller can 
    leave a message. 
    Tell the outside caller you will transfer him or her to the Answering System.
    •Even if you subscribe to Caller ID service (p. 33), Caller ID information will not be 
    displayed while the caller is recording a message or the message is being played. 
    The Caller ID information will be recorded in the Caller List (p. 34) if the 
    transferred call is an incoming call.
    1Base unit:
    Press [LOCATOR/INTERCOM/TRANSFER].
    Cordless handset: 
    Press [HOLD] (TRANSFER).
    •The call is put on hold.
    2Press [9] to hang up the call. 
    The caller will hear the greeting (p. 24), then he or she can leave a message 
    after the beep.
    Interrupting remote operation
    If another user is calling the unit from a remote location to operate the Answering 
    System, and you mistakenly answer the call, you do not have to hang up the call. 
    Go to steps 1 and 2 above.
    •The user can then operate the Answering System, by entering the remote code 
    (see “Remote Operation from a Touch Tone Phone” on page 61).
