nThe Backlight Compensation
Backlight is a situation where light comes 
from behind the subject. Subjects such as 
people become dark when pictures are 
recorded in the backlight. If you press e, 
[ ] (compensating backlight ON 
indication) appears and the backlight 
compensation function is activated. This 
function compensates the backlight by 
brightening the whole of the picture.

Taking Pictures with the Zoom
 
You can make people and subjects appear 
closer with the 4 times optical zoom, and 
landscapes can be recorded in wide angle.
(35 mm film camera equivalent: 28 mm to 
112 mm when the aspect ratio is set to 
[j])
nTo make subjects appear closer use 
(Tele)
Rotate the zoom lever towards Tele.

This camera has a 4× optical zoom.
However, if the picture size is not set to the 
highest setting for each aspect ratio [j/
 /h], a maximum of 6.2× optical 
zoom can be achieved with no picture 
quality deterioration.
nHow the extended optical zoom works
• The extended optical zoom works by 
extracting the center of the picture and 
expanding it for a higher telephoto effect. 
So, for example, if you choose [ ] (2M 
EZ), 2 million pixels (out of the total [10M], 
10.2 million possible...

A maximum of 16× zoom can be achieved 
with the 4× optical zoom and the 4× digital 
zoom when [D.ZOOM] is set to [ON] in the 
[REC] menu. However, if a picture size that 
can use extended optical zoom is selected, 
a maximum of 24.8× zoom can be achieved 
with the 6.2× extended optical zoom and 
the 4× digital zoom.

Checking the Recorded Picture (Review)
 
You can check the recorded pictures while 
still in [REC] mode.
1Press r [REV].
• The last recorded picture appears for 
about 10 seconds.
• Review is canceled when the shutter 
button is pressed halfway or the r [REV] 
is pressed again.
• You can check the previous or following 
picture with w/q.
• When the recorded pictures are too bright 
or dim, compensate the exposure. (P48)

Playing Back Pictures
 
The picture data on the built-in memory 
appears when a card is not inserted. The 
picture data on the card appears when a 
card is inserted. (P17)
Press w/q to select the picture.
w : Play back the previous picture.
q : Play back the next picture.
• The picture following the last one is the 
first picture.
• When [ROTATE DISP.] (P97) is set to 
[ON], pictures recorded by holding the 
camera vertically are played back

Deleting Pictures
 
The picture data on the built-in memory is 
deleted when a card is not inserted. The 
picture data on the card is deleted when a 
card is inserted. (P17)
nTo delete a single picture
1Select the picture with w/q.
w: Play back the previous picture.
q: Play back the next picture.
2Press [A].
3Press e to select [YES] and then 
press [MENU/SET].
• While deleting the picture, [A] appears 
on the screen.
nTo delete [MULTI DELETE]/[ALL 
DELETE]

About the LCD Monitor
nSelecting the screen to be used
A LCD monitor (LCD)
Press the [DISPLAY/LCD MODE] button 
to switch to the screen to be used.
• When the menu screen appears, the 
[DISPLAY] button is not activated. During 
playback zoom (P79), while playing back 
motion pictures (P80) and during a slide 
show (P95), you can only select “Display” 
or “Non-display”.

nAbout guide line display
When you align the subject on the guide 
lines or the cross point of these lines, you 
can take pictures with well-designed 
composition by viewing the size, the slope 
and the balance of the subject.
