Playback with Background Music
Play back movies (or a photo slideshow) with background music. You can use one of the supplied 
music tracks or connect an external audio player to use your favorite songs as background music.
Using One of the Supplied Music Tracks as Background Music
The supplied Camcorder Supplemental Disc contains 3 music tracks you can use as background 
music. The music files come pre-installed in the built-in memory.
You can mix the original audio and the background music and adjust the background music mix 
balance to your preference.
POINTS TO CHECK
• To play back scenes or a slideshow of photos recorded on the memory card, you will need to  transfer the music tracks to the memory card in advance. See the NOTES section ( 0113).
1 Open the gallery or date index screen.

2 Open the [Select Music] screen.

3Touch [ Z] or [ O] to select the desired music track.
4 Adjust the mix balance between the original sound and the background music. 
•Touch [ 1] (more of the original sound) or [ b] (more of the background music) or drag your finger 
along the [Music Balance] bar to adjust the background music balance as desired.
5Touch [ a] and then touch a story or scene to start the playback with the selected 
background music.
Operating modes:
ASelect the desired music track.
B Adjust the background music balance.
C Play back the original sound (no background music).
D Delete the music track selected.
E Listen to the music track selected. Touch again ( B) to stop the playback.

To adjust the background music balance during playback
1 During playback, touch the screen to display the playback controls. 
2 Touch [ ], drag your finger along the [Music Balance] bar to adjust the background music balance as desired and touch [f ].
To delete a music track
In the [Select Music] screen, touch [ Z] or [ O] to select the track you want to delete.
Touch [ d] and then touch [Yes].
• The selected music track is deleted.
Using an External Audio Player for Background Music
Use your favorite songs as background music by connecting an external player. 
POINTS TO CHECK
• You will need a commercially available audio cable with at least one mini-stereo plug (to connect to  the MIC terminal on the camcorder); the other end will depend on external player used). 
• Make sure that the jacket covering above the mini-stereo plug is smaller than  ∅ 9.5 mm.
1 Open the gallery or date index screen.

2 Open the [External Audio Input] screen.

3Touch [A On ].
4 Connect the external player to the camcorder’s MIC terminal.
5 Adjust the audio input as necessary.
• Start the music playback on the external player and adjust its volume according to the onscreen  indications. When the audio input is in the correct range, stop the music playback and touch [ a] 
on the camcorder.
• Touch [External Player Link] to link the video playback to the start/end of the music from the  external player.

6 Start the music playback on the external player.
• Playback will start from the first scene in the story or index screen.
• When the external audio input stops, video playback will pause. When the external audio input is restored, video playback will resume automatically.
• Even when the video playback stops, audio playback on the external player will not stop  automatically.

6 Touch a story or scene to start the video playback.
7 Start the music playback on the external player.

IMPORTANT
• If you use copyrighted songs and music tracks in your video creations, remember that music under  copyright may not be used without permission from the copyright holder, except for cases 
permitted under applicable laws, such as for personal use. Make sure to follow applicable laws 
when using music files.
NOTES
• Initializing a memory card will permanently erase any music files you may have transferred to the  card. (The music files that come pre-installed in the built-in memory will be restored after it is 
initialized.) To transfer music files from the supplied Camcorder Supplemental Disc to the memory 
card:
- Windows users: Use the supplied PIXELA’s software. For details, refer to the Software Guide 
(PDF file) of the supplied PIXELA’s software.
- Mac OS users: Use Finder to transfer music files from the [MUSIC] folder on the supplied  Camcorder Supplemental Disc to the memory card. Refer to  About the music files (0 178) for 
the folder structure of the memory card.
• Transfer music files to the memory card that contains the recordings you want to play back with  background music.
• In some cases, the video playback may not be correctly linked to the external player. For example, if  the volume of external player is too low or if the audio signal contains a lot of noise, etc.

Copying and Moving Scenes Within/Between Stories
You can copy and move scenes in the gallery within the same story scene (category), between story 
scenes in the same story, and between stories recorded in the same memory.
1 Open the list of scenes of the story that contains the scene you want to copy or move.

2 In the [Scene List] screen, drag your finger up/down to select the scene you want to copy/
move.
3 Touch the orange box on the right to open the [Edit Scene] screen and touch [Copy] or  [Move].
4 Select the destination.
• Drag your finger right/left to select the desired story and touch its thumbnail. Then, drag your  finger up/down to select the desired category and touch the orange frame on the right (number of 
scenes). And last, drag your finger up/down to move the orange bar within the category to select 
the position of the scene.
5 Copy or move the scene.
[Set]*  [Yes]*** This step is not necessary when copying/moving a scene into a story scene category that contains no other scenes.
** When copying a scene, you can touch [Stop] to interrupt the operation while it is in progress.
6 Touch [OK] and then touch [ f].
NOTES
• You cannot copy or move scenes to the two preexisting stories, [Unsorted] and [Video Snapshot]. Operating modes:

Selecting a Story’s Thumbnail Image
Initially, the image used as the story’s thumbnail is the first frame of the first scene in the story. You can 
set your favorite scene as the thumbnail that will represent the story in the gallery.
1 Open the gallery.

2 Select the story whose thumbnail you want to change.
• Drag your finger right/left to bring the desired story to the front.
3 Open the [Story Thumbnail] screen. 
[Story Details]   [Edit Story]   [Story Thumbnail]
4 Locate the frame you want to use as the story’s thumbnail.
• Playback controls will appear on the screen ( 087). Use any special playback modes (fast/slow 
playback, frame reverse/advance) as necessary to locate the desired image.
5 Touch [Set] to change the story’s thumbnail.
6Touch [ f] to return to the gallery.

Changing a Story’s Title
When you first create a story, the current date will be used as the story’s title but you can change the 
title later on. The title can be up to 14 characters long (available characters are limited). The title of the 
two preexisting stories, [Unsorted] and [Video Snapshot] cannot be changed.
1 Open the gallery.

2 Select the story whose title you want to change. 
• Drag your finger right/left to bring the desired story to the front.
3 Open the [Edit Title] screen.

4 Use the virtual keyboard to change the title. 
5Touch [OK]   [ f]  [ f] to return to the gallery.
NOTES
• When you import files with the supplied software  VideoBrowser using the option to join and import 
music and video files from the gallery, some special characters in the story’s title (/, \, , :, *, ", |, ?) 
will be changed to an underscore (_) in the file name.
Operating modes:
ASwitch between letters and numbers/special characters.
B Change the position of the cursor.
C Delete the character to the cursor’s left (backspace).
D Caps Lock. When the numerical keyboard is displayed, [#%?] switches between set 1 
and set 2 of special characters.

* When connecting a cable to the camcorder, make sure to align the triangle marks on the cable’s connector and on the camcorder’s terminal.
1 COMPONENT OUT Terminal*
Access: Open the LCD panel and terminal cover.
The component video terminal is for video only. When 
you use connection  B, do not forget the audio 
connections using the AV OUT/ X terminal.
2 AV  O U T / X Te r m i n a l
Access: Open the LCD panel and terminal cover.
Sound from the built-in speaker will be muted while the 
STV-250N Stereo Video Cable is connected to the 
camcorder. Adjust the volume on the connected TV.
3 HDMI OUT Terminal*
Access: Open the side terminal cover.
The HDMI OUT terminal offers a high-quality digital 
connection that combines audio and video in a single 
convenient cable.

In the following connection diagrams, the left side shows the terminals on the camcorder and the right 
side shows (for reference only) an example of terminals on a connected device.
Connection A HDMI
Type: Digital   Quality: High definition   Output only
Connect to a high-definition TV (HDTV) with an HDMI input terminal. If your HDTV supports HDMI-CEC or 1080p input, you 
can activate these functions with the 6   [Control for HDMI] and [HDMI 1080p Output] settings, respectively. You 
can check the standard of the current output signal with the  6   [HDMI Status] setting.
Connection  BComponent Video

Connect to a high-definition TV (HDTV) with component video input terminals. Change the following settings on the 
camcorder:

About the HDMITM connectionThe HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) connection (
A) is a convenient all-digital 
connection using a single cable for both video and audio. When you connect the camcorder to an 
HDTV equipped with an HDMI terminal, you can enjoy video and audio playback at the highest 
quality. - The HDMI OUT terminal on the camcorder is for output only. Do not connect it to an HDMI output terminal on an external device, as this may damage the camcorder.
- While the camcorder is connected to an HDTV using connection  A, there will be no video 
output from other terminals.
- Correct operation cannot be guaranteed when connecting the camcorder to DVI monitors.
- Depending on the HDTV, correct playback of personal video content may not be possible using 
connection  A. Try one of the other connections.

NOTES
• Power the camcorder using the compact power adapter and only then connect it to the computer  using the supplied USB cable in the following cases.
- To write back scenes recorded with this camcorder that were previously saved on a computer.
- To transfer music files from the supplied Camcorder Supplemental Disc to a memory card in the camcorder in order to use them as background music.

Connect to a standard TV or a VCR with audio/video input terminals. Change the following settings on the camcorder:

							Playback on a TV Screen

Playback on a TV Screen
Connect the camcorder to a TV to view and check your recordings. Playback on an HDTV using one 
of the high-definition connections will ensure the best playback quality.
1 Turn off the camcorder and the TV. 
2 Connect the camcorder to the TV. 
• Refer to Connection Diagrams  (0 118) and select the most appropriate connection for your TV.
3 Turn on the connected TV.
• On the TV, select as the video input the same terminal to which you connected the camcorder. 
Refer to the instruction manual of the connected TV.
4 Turn on the camcorder and set it to   or   mode.
• Play back the movies or photos.
NOTES
• To correctly play back movies recorded with x.v.Color ( 0144) on an HDTV compatible with this 
standard, additional settings may be required on the connected HDTV. Refer to the TV’s instruction 
manual.
• We recommend powering the camcorder using the compact power adapter.
• Connection  C: When you play back your 16:9 movies on standard TV sets with a 4:3 aspect ratio, 
the TV set will switch automatically to widescreen mode if it is compatible with the Video ID-1 
system. Otherwise, change the aspect ratio of the TV manually.
