Onscreen Displays and Data Code
You can turn most onscreen displays on or off.
Repeatedly press h to turn the onscreen displays on/off in the following sequence:
,  mode:
• All displays on
• Most displays off

• Only data code on
• All displays on
1Pressing  h will turn off most of the icons and displays that 
appear automatically but will not remove control buttons ([FUNC.], 
[PHOTO], etc.) and onscreen displays that were turned on manually 
(for example, onscreen markers or the audio level meter).
2Touch the screen to display the playback controls.
Operating modes:
About the Data CodeWith every scene or photo recorded, the camcorder keeps a data code (date/time of recording, 
information about the camera setup, etc.). 
You can select the information to be displayed with the  y / z   [Data Code] setting.

							Faders

Faders
The camcorder offers two professional looking transition effects to fade-in or fade-out scenes. You 
have the option to activate the fader only one time or every time you start or stop recording.
1 Open the fader selection screen.
[FUNC.]  [O Faders]
2 Touch the desired fader and then touch [ a].
• You can preview the transition effect on the screen.
• The icon of the selected fader appears in green.
To  f a d e  i n / o u t
Press  g  in record pause mode ( M) to start recording with a fade in. Press  g 
while recording (
N) to fade out and pause the recording.
NOTES
• When you apply a fader, not only the picture but also the sound will fade in or out.
• Faders cannot be used in the following cases: - While using the [Old Movies] cinema-look filter in   mode.
- When recording scenes with decorations.
- When recording video snapshot scenes.
- While pre-recording is activated.
• You can select whether to fade to/from a black screen or a white screen with the  7  
[Fader Setting] setting.

Custom Button and Dial
You can assign to f and CUSTOM dial one of several frequently used functions. You can then 
adjust the selected function using  f and CUSTOM dial, without having to access the menu. 
1 Open the [Custom Key/Dial] screen.

2 Touch the desired option and then touch [ a].

NOTES
• You can press and hold  f instead of the procedure above to display a quick menu of the 
options. Use the CUSTOM dial to select an option and then press  f.
Operating modes:
[oTv/Av]When you set the recording program to 
[ B Shutter-Pri. AE] or [ CAperture-Pri. AE] priority, you can 
adjust the shutter speed or aperture value with the CUSTOM 
dial.
[ Manual Exposure]When you set the recording program 
to [ y Manual Exposure], press  f to toggle between 
the aperture value, shutter speed and gain. Next, use the 
CUSTOM dial to adjust the setting.
[PAGC Limit]When you set [P AGC Limit] in the FUNC. 
panel to [ yManual], you can adjust the AGC limit with the 
CUSTOM dial. Press  f first if the AGC limit does not 
appear on the screen.
[eExposure]Adjusts the exposure. Press  f to 
display the exposure value and then use the CUSTOM dial to 
adjust the exposure value.
[BOff]Use this setting if you do not intend to use 
f  or CUSTOM dial.

The camcorder conveniently features 2 buttons to which you can assign various functions. By 
assigning often used functions, you can quickly access them with a single press of a button.
Changing the Assigned Function
1 Open the selection screen for the desired assignable button.
[FUNC.]  [MENU]   6   [Assign Button 1] or [Assign Button 2]
2 Select the desired option and then touch [ a].
Options
( Default value for assignable button 1,  default value for assignable button 2)
Using an Assignable Button
After you assign a function to one of the butto ns, press the button to activate the function.
Operating modes:
[  BLC Always On]Turns backlight correction on/off.
[ Face Only AF]Turns face only autofocus on/off (
049).
[  Story Creator]Activates Story Creator mode ( 098).
[Z Video Snapshot]Turns video snapshot on/off ( 079).
[mWB Priority]Turns white balance priority on/off ( 0147).
[ AF/MF]Switches between autofocus and manual focus ( 046). This option is available only 
for assignable button 1.
[  Powered IS]Tu r n s  P o w e r e d  I S  o n / o f f  ( 054). This option is available only for assignable 
button 2.
[BOff]Does not assign a function to the assignable button.

Saving and Loading Menu Settings
After you adjust the cinema-look filters and other settings in the FUNC. panel and setup menus, you 
can save those settings on a memory card. 
Saving Menu Settings to a Memory Card
Menu settings must be saved to memory card Y. If the memory card already has menu settings on it, 
they will be overwritten.
1 Insert a memory card into memory card slot  Y.
2 Open the [Backup Menu Settings 7 ] screen.
[FUNC.]  [MENU]  6   [Backup Menu Settings 7]
3 Touch [Save] and then touch [Yes].
• The current settings are saved to the memory card.
4 Touch [OK] and then touch [ a].
Loading Camera Settings from a Memory Card
1 Insert a memory card with menu settings into memory card slot Y.
2 Open the [Backup Menu Settings 7 ] screen.
[FUNC.]  [MENU]  6   [Backup Menu Settings 7]
3 Touch [Load] and then touch [Yes].
• After the camcorder’s current settings are replaced with the settings saved on the memory card, 
the screen will turn black momentarily and the camcorder will restart.
NOTES
• This camcorder can load settings from other Canon XA10 and VIXIA HF G10 camcorders.  Loading 
menu settings will replace all the menu settings currently in the camcorder that are common 
to both types of camcorders. In addition, settings that are not common to both types will be 
reset to default values.

1Press S.
• You can also press and hold  B on the wireless 
controller for more than 2 seconds to switch between 
shooting and playback mode.
2 Open the date index screen, if it is not displayed.
[ b ]  [1  Date]
3 Look for the scene you want to play back. 
• Move the zoom lever toward  Q to show 15 scenes 
per page; move it toward P  to show 6 scenes per page.
Operating modes:
AMemory being read.
B Recording date.
C Division line between recording dates.
D Drag your finger left for the next index page*.
E Drag your finger right for the previous index page*.
F Open the index selection screen (0 90).
G 3D Flip View ( 089).
H Scene’s timeline ( 095).
* While browsing through index pages, a scroll bar will appear at the bottom of the screen 
for a few seconds. When you have a large number of scenes it may be more convenient 
to drag your finger along the scroll bar.

4 Touch the desired scene to play it back.
• Playback will start from the scene selected and continue until the end of the last scene in the index screen.
• Touch the screen to display the playback controls. During playback, the playback controls will  disappear automatically after a few seconds without operation. In playback pause, touch the 
screen again to hide the playback controls.
During playback:
AJump to the beginning of the scene. Double-tap to jump to the previous scene.
B Jump to the beginning of next scene.
C Pause the playback.
D Fast playback* backward/forward.
E Display the volume ( 088) and background music mix balance ( 0111) controls.
F Stop the playback.
G Decoration ( 0103).
* Touch several times to increase the playback speed to approximately 5x  → 15x →  60x 
the normal speed. During fast playback, touch anywhere on the screen to return to 
normal playback.

Adjusting the volume
1 During playback, touch the screen to display the playback controls.
2 Touch [ ], drag your finger along the [Speaker Volume]* bar to adjust the volume and touch [ f].
* When  6   [AV/Headphones] is set to [ J Headphones], adjust the [Headphone Volume] bar 
instead.
During playback pause: 
IMPORTANT
• Observe the following precautions while the ACCESS indicator is on or flashing. Failing to do so  may result in permanent data loss.
- Do not open the double memory card slot cover.
- Do not disconnect the power source or turn off the camcorder.
- Do not change the camcorder’s operating mode.
• You may not be able to play back with this camcorder movies recorded on a memory card using  another device.
NOTES
• You can turn off the recording date and time display or change the information displayed with the  y    [Data Code] setting.
• Depending on the recording conditions, you may notice brief stops in video or sound playback  between scenes.
• During fast/slow playback, you may notice some anomalies (blocky video artifacts, banding, etc.) in  the playback picture.
• The speed indicated on the screen is approximate.
• Slow reverse playback will look the same as continuous frame reverse. A
Resume playback.
B Slow playback* backward/forward.
C Capture the displayed frame as a photo ( 097).
D Decoration ( 0103).
* Touch several times to increase the playback speed 1/8 →  1/4 the normal speed. During 
slow playback, touch anywhere on the screen to return to playback pause.

3D Flip View
Touch [ ] in the date index screen to switch to 3D Flip View. This convenient way of displaying 
scenes grouped by recording date in a 3D layout can be useful to flip through a large number of 
recordings.ARecording date.
B Drag your finger left to go to the next date with recordings.
C Drag your finger up and down to browse through the scenes recorded in the 
displayed date.
D Drag your finger right to go to th e previous date with recordings.
E Return to the date index screen.
F Current scene / Total number of scenes recorded on the selected date.
G Touch the scene in the front to play it back.

The Index Selection Screen: Selecting the Content to Play Back
From the index selection screen you can select the content you want to play back (original scenes by 
date or by story, or photos, for example). You can also select the memory from which you want to play 
back your recordings.
In any index screen, touch [b]. 
During single photo view, touch the screen once to display the controls then touch [ Q] to open the 
[Photos] index screen.
Options
NOTES
• Fast/slow playback modes are not available for scenes converted to standard definition. Scenes in  the [ u SD Movies] index screen can only be played back at normal speed.
Operating modes:
ATouch the tab of the desired memory: built-in memory, memory card  X or memory 
card  Y.
B Touch a control button to select the content you want to play back.
[1  Date]Scenes organized by recording date.
[ Gallery]Scenes organized by story ( 0108).
[2  Photos]Photos’ index screen.
[u  SD Movies](only when a memory card is selected) Scenes that were converted to standard 
definition to upload them to the Web ( 0133).
Two playback modes: the date index screen vs. the galleryIn the  date index screen  you can find all the movies you ha ve recorded, conveniently organized 
by recording date. When you play back scenes from the date index screen they will be played 
back in chronological order.
In the  gallery , you can find your scenes grouped as video stories. If you record movies using the 
Story Creator function ( 098), your scenes will appear in the story you created; scenes recorded 
without using this function will appear in the [Unsorted] story (or [Video Snapshot] story, in the 
case of video snapshot scenes). When you play back a story from the gallery, scenes will be 
played back in the order of the story’s outline, regardless of their recording date.
