exposure but may also reduce depth of fi eld so that less of the area behind and
in front of your subject appears to be in focus (see the top illustration at right).
To stop aperture down and increase depth of fi eld as shown in the second of
the two illustrations at right, select a higher sensitivity.

     Sensitivity Sensitivity
“Sensitivity” refers to the camera’s sensitivity to light. Sensitivity is ad-
    justed by pressing the dial lock release and rotating the sensitivity dial;
choose from values between 200 and 6400, or select L (100), H1 (defaults
to 12800), or H2 (defaults to 25600) for special situations. Higher values
can be used to reduce blur when lighting is poor, while lower values al-
low slower shutter speeds or wider apertures in bright light; note, how-
ever, that mottling may appear in pictures taken at high sensitivities, particularly at H2, while choosing
L reduces dynamic range. Values of from ISO 200 to ISO 6400 are recommended in most situations. If
A (auto) is selected, the camera will adjust sensitivity automatically in response to shooting conditions.

R RAW images can not be recorded at settings of L, H1, or H2. Only JPEG images will be recorded if these settings
are chosen when RAW , FINE+RAW, or NORMAL+RAW is selected for image quality (P 79).

R The N ISO DIAL SETTING option in the setup menu can be used to choose the sensitivity assigned to the H1
and H2 positions on the sensitivity dial (P 91). Choose from 12800, 25600, and 51200.

    ■ A (Auto)
The N ISO AUTO SETTING item in the shooting menu (P 78) controls
how the camera adjusts sensitivity when A is selected. The camera auto-
matically chooses a sensitivity between the default and maximum val-
ues; sensitivity is only raised above the default value if the shutter speed
required for optimal exposure would be slower than the value selected
    for MIN. SHUTTER SPEED.

R The camera may select shutter speeds slower than MIN. SHUTTER SPEED if pictures would still be underex-
posed at the value selected for MAX. SENSITIVITY.

Exposure Value (EV) Exposure Value (EV)
The exposure value is determined by sensitivity and
by aperture and shutter speed, which control the
amount of light to which the sensor is exposed. Dou-
bling either the sensitivity or the amount of light in-
creases EV by one, while halving it reduces EV by one.

To choose how the camera meters exposure, rotate the metering dial to
    select from the following options.
    ModeModeDescriptionDescription
oo(MULTI)(MULTI)The camera instantly determines exposure based on an analysis of composi-
tion, color, and brightness distribution. Recommended in most situations.
pp(SPOT)(SPOT)The camera meters lighting conditions in an area at the center of the frame
equivalent to 2% of the total. Recommended with backlit subjects and in other
cases in which the background is much brighter or darker than the main sub-
    ject.
    qq(AVERAGE)(AVERAGE)
Exposure is set to the average for the entire frame. Provides consistent expo-
sure across multiple shots with the same lighting, and is particularly eff
     ective for
landscapes and portraits of subjects dressed in black or white.
