802.11b Wireless LAN (WLAN) or connect directly to other
    WLAN-enabled devices.
    Learn the Terms
It is recommended that you become familiar with the following
terms as you begin to use WLAN technology.
    Term Definition
Profile A collection of defined WLAN settings.
Wireless Access Point The access point provides a wireless
    connection to a network (additional
    hardware) .
Infrastructure This connection mode uses wireless access
    points to connect to networks.
Ad hoc This mode does not use access points. It is
    used in peer-to-peer network

    Using the Wireless LAN
    Get Acquainted
    With WLAN, you can:
    ■Access the Internet
    ■Send and receive e-mail
    ■Access corporate network information
■Use virtual private networks (VPN) for secure remote access
■Use hot spots for wireless connectivity
✎Use of dial-up and wireless Internet, e-mail, corporate networks,
and other wireless communications, such as Bluetooth-enabled
devices, may require separately purchased additional hardware
and other compatible equipment, in addition to a standard
Wireless LAN (WLAN) infrastructure and a separately purchased
service contract. Check with your service provider for availability
and coverage in your area. Not all web content may be available.
Some web content may require installation of additional software.
To use WLAN on your iPAQ Pocket PC, you need to turn ON the
WLAN and set up your device.
Hot spots Public or private areas where there is a
    wireless access point available.
SSID This is the acronym for the service set
identifier. This identification number uses a
maximum number of 32 characters and is
    case sensitive.
Encryption (WEP) A set of security services used to protect
    802.11 networks from unauthorized access.

SSID This is the service set identifier (SSID) and the
default is “blank” when connecting to an
infrastructure network. This allows you to
connect to any available access point.
You and the wireless site you want to connect to
must use the same SSID. This identification
number uses a maximum of 32 characters and
    is case sensitive.
Power Management The default selection is “No.” Selecting “Yes”
will provide lower performance and use less
    power.
Network You have two choices: infrastructure or ad

    via a wireless access point.
Use ad hoc for peer-to-peer communications.
    Channel The default is “Auto.”
You do not need to specify a channel if you are
using an infrastructure network. It will use the
same channel as the access point.
