Install the power cord anchor on  the handle of the power supply. 
 
  NOTE:   Peripheral device cables  are removed for clarity.

Installing the operating system 
To operate properly, the server must have a suppo rted operating system installed. For the latest 
information on supported operating sy stems, refer to the HP website (http://www.hp.com/go/supportos
). 
Methods to install an operating  system on the server include: 
• SmartStart assisted installation—Insert the SmartS tart CD into the CD-ROM drive and reboot the 
server.

  IMPORTANT:   Always install a PPM when you install a pr ocessor. The system fails to boot if the 
corresponding PPM is missing. 
To install a processor: 
1. Power down the server (on page  20). 
2. Extend the server from the rack (on page  20). 
3. Remove the access panel (on page  21). 
4. Open the heatsink retaining bracket. 
 
  CAUTION:   The pins on the processor socket are very fr agile. Any damage to them may require replacing 
the system board.

Remove the processor socket protective cover. 
 
  IMPORTANT:   Be sure the processor remains inside the processor installation tool. 
7. If the processor has separated from the installation  tool, carefully re-insert the processor in the tool.

Align the processor installation tool with the socket and install the processor. 
 
9. Press down firmly until the processor installation  tool clicks and separates from the processor, and 
then remove the processor installation tool.

Close the processor socket retaining brac ket and the processor retaining latch. 
 
  CAUTION:   To prevent possible server malfunction or damag e to the equipment, be sure to completely close 
the processor locking lever. 
11.  Remove the heatsink cover. 
  CAUTION:   After the cover is removed, do no t touch the thermal interface media.
