Think of the Gateway as a network device with two sides:  the f irst side is made
up of your private Local Area Network (LAN)of PCs.  The other, public side is
the Internet, or the Wide Area Network (WAN), outside of your home or off ice.
The Gateway’s f irewall (NAT) protects your network of PCs so users on the
public, Internet side cannot “see” your PCs.  This is how your LAN, or network,

Chapter 3:Connecting the
Gateway You will connect the Gateway to your ADSL line and to the computers in your
home or business.
First, make sure that all the devices that you’ll be working with are powered
down, including your PCs and the Gateway.
1. Connect one end of the provided phone cable to the ADSL (RJ-11 phone)
port that is on the back of the Gateway.

4. Connect the power adapter to the Gateway. Plug the power adapter into the
electrical outlet. 
5. Turn on the Gateway. Then, turn on the f irst PC that you want to use to con-
f igure the Gateway.
