Using Battery Power
You can use a battery pack as a source of power. The battery pack that comes 
with your notebook is not fully charged at the time of purchase. Follow the steps 
below to insert and charge the battery pack.
To Insert the Battery Pack
You can insert or remove the battery pack without turning off the notebook when 
your notebook is connected to the AC adapter. Before inserting or removing a 
battery pack, close the cover.

16 To Charge the Battery Pack
1Connect the AC adapter to the notebook. 
2Insert the battery pack.
The notebook automatically charges the battery (the battery indicator light 
flashes in a double-blink pattern as the battery charges). When the battery is 85% 
full, the battery indicator light turns off. This process takes 5.5 hours if the 
system is on. To charge the battery completely, continue charging for 
approximately 3 additional hours.

17 To Remove the Battery Pack
You can insert or remove the battery pack without turning off the notebook when 
your notebook is connected to the AC adapter. Before inserting or removing a 
battery pack, close the cover.
1Turn off the notebook and close the cover.
2Slide the lock lever to the 
UNLOCK position.
3Slide the release lever to the 
UNLOCK position and slide the battery away from 
the notebook.

18 Hardware Temperature
❑The AC adapter or the bottom panel of your notebook may become warm. 
This is the result of CPU operation and does not indicate a malfunction of 
the notebook. The actual temperature varies depending on the peripherals 
and software you are using and the length of time that the unit is in use. 
❑The AC adapter may also become warm when the notebook is off and the 
battery is charging.

❑Keep the battery pack in the notebook while it is directly connected to AC 
power. The battery pack continues to charge while you are using the notebook.

adapter to recharge the battery or shut down your notebook and insert a fully-
charged battery.
❑You can extend battery life by changing the power management modes in the

Shutting Down Your Notebook
1Click the Start button on the Windows® taskbar.
2Click Shut Down at the bottom of the Start menu to display the Shut Down 
Windows dialog box.
3From the drop-down list, select Shut Down.
4Click OK.
5Wait for your notebook to turn off automatically. Your notebook is off when 
the power indicator light turns off.

Power Saving Modes
When you use a battery as the source of power for your notebook, you 
can take advantage of power management settings to conserve battery 
life. In addition to the normal operating mode, which allows you to turn off 
specific devices, your notebook has two distinct power saving modes: 
Standby and Hibernate. When using battery power, you should be aware 
that the notebook automatically enters Hibernate mode when the

Hibernate Mode
The state of the system is saved on the hard drive and power is turned off. The 
power indicator light is off in this mode. 
To activate Hibernate mode
To activate Hibernate mode, press the key combination Fn+F12. 
To return to normal mode

to its previous state.
