    Servicing Your Honda
    The rear suspension can be adjusted for
    rider (and passenger) weight and riding
    conditions by changing the spring pre-load
    and rebound and compression damping.
    To adjust, use an appropriate pin spanner
    or see your Honda dealer.
    The rear shock absorber includes a damper
    unit that contains high pressure nitrogen
    gas. Do not attempt to disassemble,
    service, or dispose of the damper; see your
    Honda dealer. The instructions f ound in
    this owner’s manual are limited to
    adjustments of the shock assembly only.

    Refer to on page . The spring pre-load adjuster ( ) has
    positions f or dif f erent load or riding
    conditions.
    Adjust the spring pre-load by turning the
    spring pre-load adjuster with a pin spanner
    ( ) and extension bar ( ).
    Always adjust the shock absorber position
    in sequence (1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10 or 10-
    9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1). Attempting to adjust
    directlyfrom1to10or10to1may
    damage the shock absorber. Position 1: f or a light load and smooth
    road conditions.
    Position 2: standard position.
    Positions 3 to 10: f or when the motorcycle
    is more heavily loaded. (Also increase
    spring pre-load for stiffer rear suspension.) 1

    Rebound Damping Turn the damping adjuster ( )
    clockwise until it will no longer turn
    (lightly seats). This is the f ull hard
    setting.
    To adjust to the standard position:
    Turn the adjuster counterclockwise

    For a light load and smooth road
    conditions, turn the adjuster
    counterclockwise toward SOFT (S).
    For a f irmer ride and rough road
    conditions, turn the adjuster clockwise
    toward HARD (H).

    To adjust to the standard position:
    Turn the damping adjuster ( )
    clockwise until it will no longer turn
    (lightly seats). This is the f ull hard

    the adjuster aligns with the reference
    punch mark ( ). This is the standard
    position. For a light load and smooth road
    conditions, turn the adjuster

    The hydraulic braking systems on your
    motorcycle dissipate the heat generated by
    the f riction of the brake pads on the brake
    discs as the wheels are slowed.
    As the brake pads wear, the brake f luid
    level will drop. A leak in the system will
    also cause the level to drop.
    Frequently inspect the system to ensure
    there are no f luid leaks. Periodically
    inspect the brake fluid level and the brake
    pads for wear.
    If the brake lever or brake pedal freeplay
    does not feel within the normal range
    while riding, check the brake pads for
    wear (page ). Worn pads should be
    replaced. If the pads are not worn beyond
    the recommended limit, there is probably air in the brake system. See your Honda
    dealer to have the air bled from the system.

    The distance between the tip of the brake
    lever and the grip may be adjusted. 76

    The recommended brake f luid is Honda
    DOT 4 Brake Fluid, or any brake f luid of
    equal quality and performance. Use fresh
    brake fluid from a sealed container. Be
    sure to read the label before opening the
    sealed container. An opened container
    may be contaminated or may have
    absorbed moisture f rom the air.
    Turn the adjuster dial ( ) while pushing
    the brake lever ( ) forward.
    Apply the brake, release it, then spin the
    wheel and check that it rotates freely.
    Repeat this procedure several times. Align the index mark ( ) on the brake
    lever with the numbers ( ) on the
    adjuster dial.

    Brake f luid can damage plastic and
    painted surf aces. Handle with care. Refer to on page .
    If your inspection indicates a low fluid
    level, have your Honda dealer add the
    recommended brake f luid. Wipe up spills immediately. Avoid brake
    f luid contact with skin or eyes. If it comes
    in contact with your eyes, wash them out
    with clean water and immediately call a
    doctor. If it comes in contact with your
    skin, wash with clean water and, if
    necessary, call a doctor.
    Do not add or replace brake fluid, except
    in an emergency. If you do add fluid, have
    your Honda dealer check the system as
    soon as possible. 76

    Place your motorcycle in an upright
    position on a firm, level surface.
    Check the fluid level. It should be
    between the UPPER ( ) and LOWER
    ( ) level marks. If the level is at or
    below the LOWER level mark, check
    the brake pads for wear (page ). Worn pads should be replaced. If the pads
    are not worn beyond the recommended
    limit, have your brake system inspected
    for leaks.
    Other Inspections
    Make sure there are no f luid leaks.
    Check for deterioration or cracks in the
    hoses and fittings.

    Brake pad wear depends upon the severity
    of usage, the type of riding, and road
    conditions. Generally, the pads will wear
    f aster on wet and dirty roads. Inspect the
    pads at each regular maintenance interval
    (page ). Front Brake
    Always inspect both pads in both the right
    and left brake calipers. Check the wear indicator grooves ( ) in
    each pad. If either pad is worn to the
    bottom of the grooves, replace both pads
    as a set. See your Honda dealer for this
    service.1
