    DEFENDER 97MY 4.31
    INTERIOR
    ILLUMINATION
    DESCRIPTION When theside lamps areswitched on,theinterior controls andgauges are
    illuminated sothey canbeeasily located duringnightdriving. Interior
    illumination isnot controlled bythe ignition switch.
    OPERATIONFeed fromthepositive batteryterminal isconnected tofusible link1(C632-1)
    of the engine compartment fuseboxbyabrown wire.Current flowsthrough
    fusible link1(C907-1) andonto thelighting switch(C041-1) onabrown wire.
    With thelighting switchineither theside orhead lampposition (C041-2),
    current willflow tofuse 16ofthe passenger compartment fusebox(C580-31)
    on ared wire. Fuse 16ofthe passenger compartment fusebox(C580-32)
    supplies afeed tothe following;
    Speedometer (C927-1&C926-1) onared/white wire.Fuelgauge (C924-1) onared/white wire.Enginecoolant temperature gauge(C735-1) onared/white wire.Cigarlighter (C074-1) onared/orange wire.Clock(C095-1) onared/white wire.
    All ofthe above areconnected inparallel andareearthed onblack wires. 
    						
    							DESCRIPTIONANDOPERATION
    4.32 DEFENDER97MY
    INSTRUMENTS DESCRIPTION The
    vehicle relaysinformation tothe driver viathe instrument pack.The
    instrument packcontains lampsandanalogue gauges.Thecolour ofthe lamp
    denotes theseverity ofthe information. Warninglampsarered, caution lamps
    are orange, greenandblue lamps indicate thatasystem isoperating.
    The analogue gaugesrelayinformation tothe driver suchasengine speedand
    engine temperature.
    OPERATIONFeed fromthepositive batteryterminal isconnected tothe engine compartment
    fuse box(C632-1) byabrown wire.Current passesthrough fusiblelink1and
    fusible link2ofthe engine compartment fusebox,which areconnected in
    parallel. Fusiblelink1(C907-1) isconnected tothe lighting switch(C041-1) by
    a brown wire,andfusible link2(C907-2) tothe ignition switch(C028-1).
    Fusible link2is also connected tofuse 2(C580-3) ofthe passenger
    compartment fusebox.Both areconnected bybrown wires.
    With thelighting switchineither theside ormain lampposition (C041-2),
    current willflow tofuse 16(C580-31) ofthe passenger compartment fusebox
    on ared wire. Fuse 16ofthe passenger compartment fusebox(C580-32) is
    connected tothe instrument pack(C233-3) byared/orange wireandsupplies a
    feed tothe side lamp warning lamp.
    A permanent batteryfeedisalso supplied fromfusible link2ofthe engine
    compartment (C907-2)tofuse 2(C580-3) ofthe passenger compartment fuse
    box. Fuse 2(C580-4) isconnected tothe column switch(C036-7) byapurple
    wire. When thecolumn switchisclosed (C036-5) afeed issent tothe main
    beam warning lamp(C233-5) withintheinstrument packonablue/white wire.
    The warning lamp(C233-2) isearthed onablack wire. 
    						
    							DESCRIPTIONANDOPERATION
    DEFENDER 97MY 4.33
    With
    theignition switchinposition II(0C94-1), powerissupplied tofuse 3
    (C580-5) ofthe passenger compartment fuseboxonawhite wire.Fuse 3of
    the passenger compartment fusebox(C580-6) isconnected tothe instrument
    pack. Current issupplied tothe fuel gauge (C922-1) andthecoolant
    temperature gauge(C196-1) ongreen wires, whichareconnected inparallel.
    The fuelgauge (C816-1) andthecoolant temperature gauge(C815-1) areboth
    earthed onblack wires.
    With theignition switchinposition II(C094-1), powerisalso supplied to
    header jointK109 (C285-17) onawhite wire.Header jointK109 feeds the
    following warninglamps;
    Theglow plugwarning lamp(C233-9) isfed byawhite wire,andearthed
    (C233-10) onayellow/black wireviathe glow plugECU (C189-2).
    Thedifflock warning lamp(C230-4) isfed byawhite wire,andearthed
    (C233-8) onablack/blue wireviathe difflock unit(C306-1).
    The ignition/no chargewarning lamp(C230-4) isfed byawhite wire,and
    earthed (C230-5) onayellow/brown wireviathe alternator (C185-1).
    Thelowbrake fluidwarning lamp(C230-4) isfed byawhite wire,andis
    connected (C230-6)tothe brake fluidlevel switch (C026-1) onablack/white
    wire. When theswitch isclosed (C031-1) apath toearth issupplied ona
    black wire.
    Thetransmission oilwarning lamp(C687-1) isfed byawhite wire,andis
    earthed (C686-1) viathe oiltemperature switch(C219-1) onaslate/red
    wire.

    4.34 DEFENDER97MY
    CLOCK DESCRIPTION The
    analogue clockislocated towards thecentre ofthe dash panel. Theclock
    is illuminated whentheside lamps areswitched on.
    OPERATIONFeed fromthepositive batteryterminal isconnected tothe engine compartment
    fuse box(C632-1) byabrown wire.Current flowsthrough bothfusible link1
    and fusible link2ofthe engine compartment fuseboxwhich areconnected in
    parallel. Fusible link2(C907-2) isconnected tofuse 2(C580-3) ofthe passenger
    compartment fuseboxbyabrown wire.Current flowsthrough fuse2(C580-4)
    to the clock (C232-1) onapurple wire.Theclock isearthed (C210-1) ona
    black wire.
    Fusible link1(C907-1) isconnected tothe lighting switch(C041-1) byabrown
    wire. When thelighting switchisin the side ormain lampposition, currentflows
    through theswitch (C041-2) andonto theclock (C095-1). Thissecond feedto
    the clock illuminates theintegral bulb.Thebulb isearthed (C210-1) onablack
    wire.

    DEFENDER 97MY 4.35
    IN-CAR
    ENTERTAINMENT
    DESCRIPTION The radio/cassette playeroperates whentheignition switchisin position Ior
    II. Signal outputfromtheradio/cassette playerisrelayed totwo loud
    speakers. Theradio/cassette displayisilluminated whentheunit isswitched
    on. OPERATION Feed fromthepositive batteryterminal isconnected tothe engine compartment
    fuse box(C632-1) byabrown wire.Current passesthrough fusiblelink2ofthe
    passenger compartment fusebox(C907-2) andsupplies theignition switch
    (C028-1) andfuse 2ofthe passenger compartment fusebox(C580-3) with
    current. Botharesupplied bybrown wires.
    Fuse 2ofthe passenger compartment fusebox(C580-4) suppliesaconstant
    battery feedtothe radio/cassette (C098-4)onapurple wire.
    With theignition switchinposition IorII, current issupplied tofuse 7
    (C580-13) ofthe passenger compartment fuseboxonawhite/orange wire.
    Fuse 7(C580-134) isconnected tothe radio/cassette (C098-7)bya
    white/orange wire,andsupplies anignition feed.Theradio isearthed (C098-8)
    on ablack wire.
    The radio cassette playerisconnected tothe speakers asfollows;
    RH front door speaker byblack/white (C092-5)andblack/brown (C092-6)
    wires.
    LH front door speaker bybrown/black (C092-3)andwhite/black (C092-4)
    wires. 
    						
    							DESCRIPTIONANDOPERATION
    4.36 DEFENDER97MY
    CIGAR
    LIGHTER
    DESCRIPTION The cigar lighter islocated towards thecentre ofthe dash panel. Pressing the
    centre ofthe cigar lighter latches theheater element intotheholder. Withthe
    ignition inposition II,power flowsthrough theheating element ofthe cigar
    lighter, causing itto heat up.When theheating element reaches asufficient
    temperature, theholder automatically releasesthecigar lighter whichcanthen
    be removed foruse.
    The location ofthe cigar lighter holder isilluminated whentheside lamps are
    switched on.
    OPERATIONFeed fromthepositive batteryterminal isconnected tothe engine compartment
    fuse box(C632-1) byabrown wire.Current passesthrough fusiblelink1and
    fusible link2ofthe engine compartment fusebox,which areconnected in
    parallel. Fusible link1ofthe engine compartment fusebox(C907-1) suppliesaconstant
    battery feedtothe lighting switch(C041-1) onabrown wire.When thelighting
    switch isin the side ormain lampposition, currentflowsthrough theswitch
    (C041-2) tofuse 16ofthe passenger compartment fusebox(C580-31) ona
    red wire. Fuse 16(C580-32) isconnected thecigar lighter illumination bulb
    (C074-1) byared/orange wire.Thebulb isearthed (C089-1) onablack wire.
    Fusible link2ofengine compartment fusebox(C907-2) isconnected tothe
    ignition switch(C028-1) byabrown wire.When theignition switchisin position
    II, current flowsfromtheignition switch(C094-1) tofuse 9ofthe passenger
    compartment fusebox(C580-17) onawhite wire.Fuse 9(C580-16) is
    connected tothe cigar lighter (C086-1) byagreen wire.Thecigar lighter is
    earthed (C089-1) onablack wire.
