    To display images in “contact sheets” of four, nine, or 72 images, press the W button.

    Calendar Playback
    To view images taken on a selected date, press the W button when 72 images are 
    displayed.
    Press the  W button to toggle between the date list 
    and the list of thumbnails for the selected date.
     Use 
    the multi selector to highlight dates in the date list 
    or to highlight pictures  in the thumbnail list.
    The operations can be performed depend on whether the cursor is in the date list or 
    the thumbnail list:
    Full-frame  playbackCalendar playback
    Thumbnail playback

    Toggle between date 
    list and thumbnail list WPress 
    W button in date list to place cursor in thumbnail 
    list.
     Press again to return to date list.
    Exit to thumbnail

    Taking a Closer Look: Playback Zoom
    Press the X button to zoom in on the image displa yed in full-frame playback or on the 
    image currently highlighted in thumbnail or calendar playback.
     The following 
    operations can be performed while zoom is in effect:

    X to zoom in to maximum of 
    approximately 31 × (large images), 23 × 
    (medium images) or 15 × (small 
    images).
     Press  W to zoom out. While 
    photo is zoomed in, use multi selector 
    to view areas of image not visible in 
    monitor.
     Keep multi selector pressed to scroll rapidly to other 
    areas of frame.
     Navigation window is displayed when zoom 
    ratio is altered; area currently visible in monitor is indicated by 
    yellow border.
    View other 
    areas of image
    Select faces Faces (up to 35) detected during zoom 
    are indicated by white borders in 
    navigation window.
     Rotate sub-
    command dial to view other faces.
    View other  images Rotate main command dial to view same location in other 
    images at current zoom ratio.
    Change protect  status L

    Return to 
    shooting mode  / 
    KMonitor will turn off. Photographs can be taken immediately.

    Protecting Photographs from Deletion
    In full-frame, zoom, thumbnail, and calendar playback, the L button can be used to 
    protect photographs from accidental deletion.
     Protected files can not be deleted 
    using the  O button or the  Delete option in the playback menu.
     Note that protected 
    images  will be deleted when the memory card is formatted ( 032).
    To protect a photograph:
    1Select an image.
    Display the image in full-frame playback or  playback zoom or highlight it in the 
    thumbnail list in thumbnai l or calendar playback.
    2Press the L button.
    The photograph will be marked with a  a 
    icon.
     To remove protection from the 
    photograph so that it can be deleted, display 
    the photograph or highlight it in the 
    thumbnail list and then press the  L 
    button.

    ARemoving Protection from All Images
    To remove protection from all images in the folder or folders currently selected in the 
    Playback folder  menu, press the  L and  O buttons together for about two seconds during 
    playback.

    Deleting Photographs
    To delete the photograph displayed in full-frame playback or the photograph 
    highlighted in the thumbnail list, press the  O button.
     To delete multiple selected 
    photographs, all photographs taken on a selected date, or all photographs in the 
    current playback folder, use the  Delete option in the playback menu.
     Once deleted, 
    photographs can not be recovered.
    Full-Frame, Thumbnail, and Calendar Playback
    Press the  O button to delete the current photograph.
    1Select an image.
    Display the image or highlight it in the  thumbnail list in thumbnail or calendar 
    playback.
    2Press the  O button.
    A confirmation dialog will be displayed.
    3Press the  O button again.
    To delete the photograph, press the  O button again. To exit 
    without deleting the photograph, press the  K button.

    ACalendar Playback
    During calendar playback, you can delete all photographs taken on a selected date by 
    highlighting the date in the date list and pressing the  O button ( 0172).

    The  After delete  option in the playback menu determines whether the next or previous 
    image is displayed after an image is deleted ( 0200).

    The Playback Menu
    The Delete  option in the playback menu contains the following options. Note that 
    depending on the number of images, some  time may be required for deletion.
    ❚❚Selected: Deleting Selected Photographs
    1Choose  Selected .
    Press the  G button and select  Delete in 
    the playback menu.
     Highlight  Selected and 
    press 2.
    2Highlight a picture.
    Use the multi selector to highlight a picture 
    (to view the highlighted picture full screen, 
    press and hold the  X button; to view images 
    in other locations, hold the  D button, press 
    1 , and select the desired card and folder as 
    described on page 164).
    3Select the highlighted picture.
    Press the  W button to select the 
    highlighted picture.
     Selected pictures are 
    marked by a  O icon.
     Repeat steps 2 and 3 to 
    select additional pictures; to deselect a 
    picture, highlight it and press  W.

    Q Selected Delete selected pictures.
    n Select date Delete all pictures taken on a selected date ( 0177).
    R All Delete all pictures in the folder currently selected for 
    playback (
    0195). If two cards are inserted, you can 
    select the card from which pictures will be deleted.

    4Press J to complete the operation.
    A confirmation dialog will be displayed; 
    highlight  Ye s and press  J.

    1Choose Select date .
    In the delete menu, highlight  Select date 
    and press 2.
    2Highlight a date.
    Use the multi selector to highlight a date.
    To view the pictures taken on the 
    highlighted date, press  W.
     Use the multi 
    selector to scroll through the pictures, or 
    press and hold  X to view the current picture 
    full screen.
     Press  W to return to the date 
    list.
    3Select the highlighted date.
    Press  2 to select all pictures taken on the 
    highlighted date.
     Selected dates are marked 
    with a  M icon.
     Repeat steps 2 an d 3 to select 
    additional dates; to deselect a date, 
    highlight it and press  2.
    4Press  J to complete the operation.
    A confirmation dialog will be displayed; 
    highlight  Ye s and press  J.

    Connections
    This section describes how to use the supplied UC-E4 USB cable to connect the 
    camera to a computer.
    Before Connecting the Camera
    Before connecting the camera, install the software on the supplied ViewNX 2 CD. To  
    ensure that data transfer is not interrupte d, be sure the camera EN-EL15 battery is 
    fully charged.
     If in doubt, charge the battery before use or use an EH-5a AC adapter 
    and EP-5B power connector (available separately).
    ❚❚ Supplied Software
    ViewNX 2 includes a “Nikon Transfer 2” function for copying pictures from the camera 
    to the computer, where ViewNX 2 can be used to view and print selected images or 
    to edit photographs and movies.
     For more information, see ViewNX 2 online help.
    ❚❚Supported Operating Systems
    The supplied software can be used with computers running the following operating 
    systems:
    • Windows : Windows 7 (Home Basic/Home Pr emium/Professional/Enterprise/
    Ultimate), Windows Vista Service Pack  2 (Home Basic/Home Premium/Business/
    Enterprise/Ultimate) and Windows XP Serv ice Pack 3 (Home Edition/Professional).
     
    ViewNX 2 runs as 32-bit applications in 64-bit editions of Windows 7 and Windows 
    Vista.
    • Macintosh : Mac OS X (version 10.4.11, 10.5.8, 10.6.4)

    Connecting to a Computer
    AConnecting Cables
    Be sure the camera is off when connec ting or disconnecting interface cables.
     Do not use 
    force or attempt to insert the connectors at an angle.
     Close the camera connector cover 
    when the connector is not in use.
    DDuring Transfer
    Do not turn the camera off or disconnect th e USB cable while transfer is in progress.
    AWindows
    To visit the Nikon website after installing ViewNX 2, select  All Programs> Link to Nikon  
    from the Windows start menu (Internet connection required).

    Connecting the Camera
    Connect the camera using the supplied UC-E4 USB cable.

     Turn the computer on and wait for it to start up.
    3Connect the USB cable.
    Connect the USB cable as shown. Do not use force or attempt to insert the 
    connectors at an angle.

    5Transfer photographs.
    After following the on-screen instructions to 
    start Nikon Transfer 2, click  Start Transfer to 
    transfer photographs (for more information 
    on using Nikon Transfer 2, start ViewNX 2 or 
    Nikon Transfer 2 and select  ViewNX 2 Help 
    from the  Help menu).
    6Turn the camera off and disconnect the US B cable when transfer ends.
    Nikon Transfer 2 will close automatically when transfer is complete.
    DUSB Hubs
    Connect the camera directly to the computer; do not connect the cable via a USB hub 
    or keyboard.
