    Adjusting the Focus
    Adjusting the Focus
The camcorder incorporates Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology, allowing you to use continuous AF or one-shot AF
while shooting. Select the focusing method that best fulfils your needs and is most suited for the lens you are
using. Refer also to the instruction manual of the lens. When using a lens included with a lens kit, refer only to the
    explanations in this section.
Manual focus: Turn the focus ring on the lens or use the Browser Remote application to adjust the focus. The
camcorder offers several focus assistance functions to help you focus more accurately when using the manual
    focus.
One-shot AF*: With the lens's focus mode switch set to AF, press the ONE-SHOT AF button or use the Browser
Remote application to temporarily let the camcorder focus automatically on the subject at the center of the
    screen.
Continuous AF*: The camcorder continuously focuses on the subject at the center of the screen. By pressing the
AF LOCK button, you can change the composition of the picture while keeping the focus.
Face AF**: The camcorder automatically detects a person's face, focuses on it and can track it if that person
    moves.
    * Available when an EF lens (except manual focus lenses) is attached to the camcorder.
** Available only with compatible EF lenses (A202).
    Focusing methods and required settings
1For EF Cinema lenses compatible with focus adjustment (A202), refer to the table below.2[~ Camera Setup] > [AF] > [Mode].3Depending on the lens, the focus ring may be disabled when the focus mode switch is set to AF.
Required settings on EF Cinema lensesTo adjust the focus from the camcorder when using a compatible EF Cinema lens (A202), you will need to
change the focus mode using the controls on the lens. Required settings vary depending on the lens. Refer to

    Manual Focus
    Using the Focus Ring
1 Set the focus mode switch on the lens to MF (manual focus) mode.
    • When using a compatible EF Cinema lens, enable manual adjustment on the lens (A71).
    • [MF] will appear on the screen.
2 Turn the focus ring to adjust the focus.
    • With some EF lenses, you may be able to operate the focus ring even when the focus mode switch on the
    lens is set to AF.
    Remote Operation Using Browser Remote
After completing the necessary preparations (A153), you can adjust the focus remotely from a Wi-Fi-enabled
device using the Browser Remote application.
1 Set the focus mode switch on the lens to AF (autofocus) mode.
    • When using a compatible EF Cinema lens, enable automatic adjustment on the lens (A 71).
    • [AF] will appear on the left of the screen.
2 Press the [FOCUS] controls to adjust the focus as necessary.
    • Press one of the controls on the [NEAR] side to focus closer or one of the controls on the [FAR] side to focus
    farther away.
    • There are three levels of adjustment - [ ]/[ ] is the smallest and [ ]/[ ] the largest.
    NOTES
    • Depending on the lens used, focus adjustment may not be possible.
    • If you operate the zoom after focusing manually, the focus on the subject may be lost.
    • When adjusting the focus, be careful not to touch the front of the lens or moving parts on the lens except for
    the focus ring.
    • If you focus manually and then leave the camcorder with the power turned on, the focus on the subject may
be lost after a while. This possible slight shift in focus is a result of the internal temperature rising in the
camcorder and lens. Check the focus before resuming shooting.
    • When an optional RC-V100 Remote Controller is connected to the camcorder, you can adjust the focus with
the remote controller's FOCUS dial. At default settings, turn the dial right to focus farther and left to focus
    nearer.
    Using the Focus Assistance Functions
In order to focus more accurately, you can use two focus assistance functions – peaking, which creates a clearer
contrast by emphasizing the outlines of the subject, and magnification, which enlarges the image on the screen.
You can use both functions simultaneously for greater effect.
You can also use the [wOther Functions] > [Custom Function] > [Focus Assistance B&W] setting (A121) to
switch the screen to black & white while using the focus assistance functions.

•^ appears at the lower center of the screen and the center of
the screen is magnified approximately 2 times*.
2 If you need to move around the magnification frame to check other
parts of the image, use the joystick (ÝÞ).
    • You can move the orange frame 5 steps vertically or horizontally.
Press the CANCEL button to return the magnification frame to the
    center position.
3 Press the MAGN. button again to cancel the magnification.
    * The magnification that appears on the OLED screen and on the viewfinder screen is
different. The magnification also differs based on the video configuration.
    NOTES
    • Peaking/Magnification appears only on the camcorder screen. It will
not appear on an external monitor connected to the camcorder and
will not appear in your recordings.
    • You can use the [£ OLED/VF Setup] > [Peaking] > [Peaking 1]
and [Peaking 2] settings to set the color, gain and frequency of the
two peaking levels independently of each other.
    • You can use the [w Other Functions] > [Custom Function] >
[Magn. Add. Disp.] setting (A 121) to select an additional
assistance display (peaking or the edge monitor) to also be displayed
    when magnification is used.
    • The camcorder features professional video scopes (A93). You can
display the edge monitor to help you focus even more accurately.
    • You can use peaking together with the edge monitor. In such case, The gain and frequency of the peaking
effect will be adjusted automatically according to the gain settings of the edge monitor.[£OLED/VF Setup]

camcorder will focus automatically. When you are using Face
AF, a white detection frame will appear around the face of the
person who has been determined to be the main subject.
    • When correct focus has been achieved, the AF frame turns green.
    • If the camcorder cannot focus automatically, the AF frame will turn red.
    • The AF frame will disappear when you release the ONE-SHOT AF button.
    NOTES
    • One-shot AF is not available when face AF is set to [Face Only] and a face has not been detected.
    • When the aperture value used is F11 or higher, the camcorder will focus using contrast-detection autofocus.
    Continuous AF
When an EF lens (except for manual focus lenses) is attached to the camcorder, you can have the camcorder
    focus automatically.
1 Set the focus mode switch on the lens to AF in advance.

    NOTES
    • The point where the camcorder focuses may change slightly depending on shooting conditions, such as subject,
brightness and zoom position. Check the focus before resuming shooting.
    • Autofocus may not work well when [~ Camera Setup] > [ISO/Gain] > [Extended Range] is set to [On] and
an ISO speed or gain value in the extended range is selected.
    • When using smaller apertures, focusing on the subject may become more difficult.

    • One-shot AF is not available when the shutter speed mode is set to [Slow] and the shutter speed is set to 1/4
    or 1/3.
    • Autofocus may take longer in the following cases.
    - When the frame rate (set in the video configuration) or shooting frame rate is set to PF29.97, 29.97P,
    23.98P, PF25.00 or 25.00P.
    - With some EF lenses, the camcorder may take longer to focus automatically or may not be able to focus
correctly. Visit your local Canon Web site for the latest information.
    • Dual Pixel CMOS AF will not work in the following cases.

Detecting and Focusing On Faces (Face AF)
When using a compatible EF lens (A202), the camcorder can detect a
person’s face during autofocus mode, automatically focus on it, and
even track it if the person moves. When there are a number of people in
the picture, one person (with the white face detection frame) will be
determined to be the main subject and the camcorder will focus on that
person’s face. You can also change the person selected as main
    subject.
1 Set the focus mode switch on the lens to AF in advance.
    • [AF] will appear on the left of the screen.
