    Using Watermarks
    The Watermark option allows you to print text over an existing 
    document. For example, you may want to have large gray 
    letters reading “DRAFT” or “CONFIDENTIAL” printed diagonally 
    across the first page or all pages of a document. 
    There are several predefined watermarks that come with the 
    printer, and they can be modifi ed, or you can add new ones to 
    the list. 
    Using an Existing Watermark
    1To change the print settings from your software 
    application, access printer  properties. See “Printing a 
    Document” on page 11. 
    2Click the Other Options tab, and select the desired 
    watermark from the 
    Watermark drop-down list. You will 
    see the selected watermark in the preview image. 
    3Click OK and start printing. 
    NOTE: The preview image shows how the page will look when 
    it is printed.
    Creating a Watermark
    1To change the print settings from your software 
    application, access printer  properties. See “Printing a 
    Document” on page 11. 
    2Click the Other Options tab, and click the Edit button in 
    the 
    Watermark section. The Edit Watermark window 
    appears. 
    3Enter a text message in the Watermark Message box. 
    You can enter up to 40 characters. The message displays 
    in the preview window.
    When the 
    First Page Only box is checked, the watermark 
    prints on the first page only.
    4Select watermark options. 
    You can select the font name, style, size, or grayscale level 
    from the 
    Font Attributes section and set the angle of the 
    watermark from the 
    Message Angle section. 
    5Click Add to add a new watermark to the list.   
    6When you have finished editing, click OK and start 
    printing. 
    To stop printing the watermark, select 
    (No Watermark) from 
    the 
    Watermark drop-down list. 
    Editing a Watermark
    1To change the print settings from your software 
    application, access printer  properties. See “Printing a 
    Document” on page 11. 
    2Click the Other Options tab and click the Edit button in 
    the 
    Watermark section. The Edit Watermark window 
    appears.
    3Select the watermark you want to edit from the Current 
    Watermarks
     list and change the watermark message and 
    options. 
    4Click Update to save the changes.
    5Click OK until you exit the Print window. 
    Deleting a Watermark
    1To change the print settings from your software 
    application, access printer  properties. See “Printing a 
    Document” on page 11.
    2From the Other Options tab, click the Edit button in the 
    Watermark section. The 
    Edit Watermark window 
    appears. 
    3Select the watermark you want to delete from the Current 
    Watermarks
     list and click Delete. 
    4Click OK until you exit the Print window.

    Using Overlays
    What is an Overlay?
    An overlay is text and/or images stored in the computer’s hard 
    disk drive (HDD) as a special file format that can be printed on 
    any document. Overlays are often used to take the place of 
    preprinted forms and letterhead paper. Rather than using 
    preprinted letterhead, you can cr eate an overlay containing the 
    exact same information that is currently on your letterhead. To 
    print a letter with your company’s letterhead, you do not need 
    to load preprinted letterhead paper in the printer. You can use 
    your printer to print the letterh ead overlay on your document.
    Creating a New Page Overlay
    To use a page overlay, you must create a new page overlay 
    containing your logo or image.
    1Create or open a document cont aining text or an image for 
    use in a new page overlay. Position the items exactly as 
    you wish them to appear when printed as an overlay.
    2To save the document as an overlay, access printer 
    properties. See “Printing a Document” on page 11.
    3Click the Other Options tab, and click Edit button in the 
    Overlay section. 
    4In the Edit Overlay window, click Create Overlay. 
    5In the Create Overlay window, type a name of up to 
    eight characters in the 
    File name box. Select the 
    destination path, if necessary. (The default is 
    C:\Formover).
    6Click Save. The name appears on the Overlay List box. 
    7Click OK or Yes to finish creating. 
    The file is not printed. Instead it is stored on your 
    computer’s hard disk drive. 
    NOTE: The overlay document size must be the same as the 
    documents you print with the overlay. Do not create an overlay 
    with a watermark.

    Using a Page Overlay
    After an overlay has been created, it is ready to be printed with 
    your document. To print an overlay with a document:
    1Create or open the document you want to print. 
    2To change the print settings from your software 
    application, access printer 
    properties. See “Printing a 
    Document” on page 11. 
    3Click the Other Options tab. 
    4Select the desired overlay from the Overlay drop-down 
    list box. 
    5If the overlay file you want does not appear in the 
    Overlay list, click Edit button and Load Overlay, and 
    select the overlay file. 
    If you have stored the overlay file you want to use in an 
    external source, you can also  load the file when you access 
    the 
    Load Overlay window. 
    After you select the file, click 
    Open. The file appears in the 
    Overlay List box and is available for printing. Select the 
    overlay from the 
    Overlay List box. 
    6If necessary, click Confirm Page Overlay When 
    Printing
    . If this box is checked, a message window 
    appears each time you submit a document for printing, 
    asking you to confirm your wish  to print an overlay on your 
    document. 
    If this box is not checked and an overlay has been 
    selected, the overlay automatically prints with your 
    document. 
    7Click OK or Yes until printing begins. 
    The selected overlay downloads with your print job and 
    prints on your document. 
    NOTE: The resolution of the overlay document must be the 
    same as that of the document yo u will print with the overlay. 
    Deleting a Page Overlay
    You can delete page overlays that you no longer use. 
    1In the printer properties window, click the Other Options 
    tab. 
    2Click the Edit button in the Overlay section. 
    3Select the overlay you want to delete from the Overlay 
    List
     box. 
    4Click Delete Overlay. 
    5When a confirming message window appears, click Yes.
    6Click OK until you exit the Print window.

    Locally
    You can connect the printer directly to a selected computer, 
    which is called “host computer,” on the network. 
    The following procedure is for Microsoft
    ® Windows® XP. For 
    other Windows operating syst ems, see the corresponding 
    Windows Users Guide or online help.
    NOTES: 
    • Check the operating system(s) that are compatible with your  printer. Please refer to the OS Compatibility section of 
    Printer Specifications in the Getting started chapter.
    • If you need to know the exact name of your printer, you can 
    check the supplied Drivers and Utilities CD.
    Setting Up a Host Computer
    1Start Windows. 
    2From the Start menu select Printers and Faxes. 
    3Double-click your printer driver icon. 
    4From the Printer menu, select Sharing. 
    5Check the Share this printer box.
    6Fill in the Shared Name field, and then click OK.
    Setting Up a Client Computer 
    1Right-click the Windows Start button and select Explore.
    2Select My Network Places  and then right-click Search 
    for Computers
    .
    3Enter the IP address of  host computer in Computer name 
    field, and click 
    Search. (In case host computer requires 
    User name and Password, enter User ID and password 
    of host computer account.)
    4Double-click Printers and Faxes.
    5Right-click printer driver icon, select Connect.
    6Click Yes, if the installation confirm message appears.

    5Scanning
    Scanning with your machine lets you turn pictures and text into 
    digital files on your computer.  Then you can fax or e-mail the 
    files, display them on your we b site or use them to create 
    projects that you can print using SmarThru software or the WIA 
    driver.
    This chapter includes:

    • Scanning Process with TWAIN-enabled Software
    • Scanning Using the WIA Driver
    NOTES: 
    • Check the Operating System(s) that are compatible  with your printer. Please refer to the OS Compatibility 
    section of Printer Specifications in the Getting started 
    chapter.
    • You can check your printer name in the supplied  Drivers and Utilities CD.
    • The maximum resolution that can be achieved  depends upon various factors, including computer 
    speed, available disk space, memory, the size of the 
    image being scanned, and bit depth settings. Thus, 
    depending on your system  and what you are scanning, 
    you may not be able to scan at certain  resolutions, 
    especially using enhanced dpi.
    Smarthru Office
    The supplied Drivers and Utilities  CD provides you with 
    SmarThru Office. SmarThru Office offers you convenient 
    features to use with your machine. 
    Starting SmarThru Office
    Follow the steps below to start SmarThru Office:
    1Ensure that your printer and computer are turned on and 
    properly connected to each other.
    2Once you have installed SmarThru Office, you will see the 
    SmarThru Office icon on your desktop.
    3Double-click the SmarThru Office icon.
    4The SmarThru Office starts.
    For more information, click 
    Help> SmarThru Office 
    help
    .
    Quick Start Guide
    This menu displays direct buttons  for some features. The direct 
    buttons include: 
    Categories, Binder, Life Cycle, Scan and 
    OCR
    , Fix and Enhance, and Dell Website. You can disable 
    this menu by checking “
    Do not show this diaglog again”.
    Using SmarThru Office
    Scanning
    1Click scan icon.
    NOTES: 
    •In Microsoft
    ® Windows® XP operating system, you can use 
    SmarThru Office launcher, which is on the right end of 
    taskbar, to easily open the 
    Scan Setting window.
    • In other operating systems beside Windows XP, click the  SmarThru icon   in the tray area of the windows taskbar 
    to activate the SmarThru Office launcher.

    3Set scan settings and click Scan. For more information,

    Send to
    Email
    You can send email while working on SmarThru Office.
    NOTE: You need an email client program, such as Outlook 
    Express, to send email in SmarThru Office. Procedure for 
    sending email may differ depending on email client program 
    you are using.
    1Select File > Send to> Send By E-mail.
    2An email client opens.
    3Type in necessary information and send your email.
    1 Select 
    ScannerAllows you to select between the Local or 
    Network scanner. 
    2Select 
    Profile
    Allows you to save settings frequently used 
    for future use. Click Ne
    w Profile to save the 
    setting. 
    3 Scan 
    SettingsAllows you to customize settings for Scan 
    Size and Paper Source.

    Fax
    You can send fax while working on SmarThru Office.
    1Select File > Send to> Send By Fax.

    3Type in necessary information and click Send Fax.
    NOTE: For more information about SmarThru Office, click 
    Help > SmarThru Office help. The SmarThru Office Help 
    window appears; you  can view on screen he lp supplied on the 
    SmarThru program.
    Follow the steps below to uninstall SmarThru Office.  Before 
    you begin the uninstall, ensure th at all applications are closed 
    on your computer.
    a) From the 
    Start menu, select Programs or All 
    Programs
    .
    b) Select 
    SmarThru Office, and then select Uninstall 
    SmarThru Office
    .
    c) When your computer asks you to confirm your selection, 
    read the statement and click 
    OK.
    d) Click Finish.

    Scanning Process with TWAIN-
    enabled Software 
    If you want to scan documents using other software, you will 
    need to use TWAIN-compliant software, such as Adobe® 
    Photoshop®. The first time you scan with your machine, select 
    it as your TWAIN source in  the application you use. 
    The basic scanning process involves a number of steps:
    1Ensure that your printer and computer are turned on and 
    properly connected to each other.
    2Place a single document face  down on the document glass. 
    OR load the document(s) face  up into the ADF (or DADF).
    3Open an application, such as Photoshop. 
    4Open the TWAIN window and set the scan options.
    5Scan and save your scanned image.
    NOTE: You need to follow the program’s instructions for 
    acquiring an image. See the us er’s guide of the application.
    Scanning Using the WIA Driver
    Your machine also supports the Windows Image Acquisition 
    (WIA) driver for scanning images. WIA is one of the standard 
    components provided by Microsoft
    ® Windows® XP and works 
    with digital cameras and scanners . Unlike the TWAIN driver, the 
    WIA driver allows you to scan  and easily manipulate images 
    without using additional software.
    NOTE: The WIA driver works only on Windows XP/2003/Vista 
    with USB port. 
    Windows XP
    1Place a single document face  down on the document glass. 
    OR load the document(s) face  up into the ADF (or DADF).
    2From the Start menu on your desktop window, select 
    Settings, Control Panel, and then Scanners and 
    Cameras
    .
    3Double click your scanner driver icon. The Scanner and 
    Camera Wizard launches.
    4Choose your scanning preferences and click Preview to 
    see how your preferences affect the picture.
    5Click Next.
    6Enter a picture name, and select a file format and 
    destination to save the picture.
    7Follow the on-screen in structions to edit the picture after it 
    is copied to your computer.
    Windows Vista
    1Place a single document face  down on the document glass. 
    OR load the document(s) face up into the ADF (or DADF).
    2Click Start → Control Panel → Hardware and Sound →  
    Scanners and Cameras. 
    3Click on Scan a document or picture. Then Windows 
    Fax and Scan 
     application is opened automatically.
    NOTE: To view scanners, user can click on  View scanners 
    and cameras. 
    4Click Scan and then scan driver is opened.
    5Choose your scanning preferences and click Preview to 
    see your preferences affect the picture.
    6Click Scan.
    NOTE: If you want to  cancel the scan job, press the Cancel 
    button on the Scanner and Camera Wizard.

    This chapter includes:

    Printer Status Monitor
    The printer status monitor screen launches when you send a 
    print job to the printer. This  only appears on the computer 
    screen. Depending on the remaining toner level, the launched 
    printer status monitor screen is different. 
    If you are a Windows user, from the 
    Start menu, select 
    Programs or All Programs  → Dell → Dell Printers → Dell 
    1235cn Color Laser MFP
     → Printer Status Monitor.
    The 
    Printer Status Monitor program displays the current 
    status of the printer, the level of toner remaining in the toner 
    cartridge(s) and various other information. You can also change 
    settings.
    • Printing Status: The Printer Status Monitor displays the 
    current status of the printer.
    • Toner Level : You can view the level of toner remaining 
    in the toner cartridge(s).
    • Order Supplies : Click to order replacement toner 
    cartridges online.
    • User’s Guide: Allows you to view the 
    Dell 1235cn Color 
    Laser MFP
     User’s Guide.
    Printer Settings Utility
    When you install the Dell software, the Printer Settings Utility 
    is automatically installed. 
    To open the Printer Settings Utility.
    1 Click Start → Programs or All Programs  → Dell → 
    Dell Printers
     → Dell 1235cn Color Laser MFP → 
    Printer Settings Utility.
    The Printer Settings Utility window opens.
    2The Printer Settings Utility window provides several 
    features.
    For more information, click the    button.
    To use the default settings, click the Printer Default button 
    and click Apply button.
    To exit, click the 
    Exit button at the bottom of the window.

    To order replacement toner cartridges or supplies from Dell:
    1Double-click the Dell Toner Reorder Program icon on your 
    desktop.

    2The Dell 1235cn MFP Toner Reorder window opens.
    Firmware Update Utility
    You can update the printer firmware using Firmware Update 
    Utility
    .
    1Click Start → Programs or All Programs  → Dell → Dell 
    Printers
     → Dell 1235cn Color Laser MFP → Firmware 
    Update Utility
    .
    The 
    Firmware Update Utility window opens.
    Follow the on screen instructio ns to complete the firmware

    7Using Your Printer with 
    a Macintosh
    Your printer supports Macintosh systems with a built-in USB 
    interface or 10/100 Base-TX network interface card. When you 
    print a file from a Macintosh computer, you can use the CUPS driver 
    by installing the PPD file. 
    NOTE: Some printers do not support a network 
    interface. Ensure that your  printer supports a network 
    interface by referring to Printer Specifications in the 
    Specifications chapter.
    This chapter includes:

    Installing Software
    The  Drivers and Utilities  CD that came with your printer 
    provides you with the PPD file th at allows you to use the CUPS 
    driver or Apple LaserWriter driver 
    (only available when you 
    use a printer which supports the PostScript driver)
    , for 
    printing on a Ma cintosh computer. 
    Also, it provides you with the  Twain driver for scanning on a 
    Macintosh computer.
    1Ensure that you connect your  printer to the computer. Turn 
    on your computer and printer.
    2Insert the  Drivers and Utilities  CD which came with your 
    printer into the computer’s optical drive.
    3Double-click CD icon that appears on your Macintosh 
    desktop.
    4Double-click the MAC_Installer folder.
    5Double-click the Installer OS X icon.
    6Enter the password and click OK.
    7The Dell Installer window opens. Click Continue
    8Select Easy Install and click Install. Easy Install is 
    recommended for most users. All components necessary 
    for printer operations will be installed. 
    If you select 
    Custom Install, you can choose individual 
    components to install.
    9Click Continue, when the message which warns that all 
    application will close appears.
    10After the installation is finished, click Quit.
    NOTE: 
    • If you have installed scan driver, click 
    Restart.
    • After the installation is finished, see “Setting Up the Printer” 
    on page 28
    Uninstalling software
    Uninstall is required if you are upgrading the software, or if 
    installation fails.
    1Insert the  Drivers and Utilities CD which came with your 
    printer into the computer’s optical drive.
    2Double-click CD icon that appears on your Macintosh 
    desktop.
    3Double-click the MAC_Installer folder.
    4Double-click the Installer OS X icon.
    5Enter the password and click OK.
    6The Dell Installer window opens. Click Continue.
    7Select Uninstall and click Uninstall. 
    8Click Continue, when the message which warns that all 
    application will close appears.
    9When the uninstallation is done, click Quit.

    Setting Up the Printer 
    Set up for your printer will be different depending on which 
    cable you use to connect the pr inter to your computer—the 
    network cable or the USB cable.
    For a Network-connected
    NOTE: Some printers do not support a network 
    interface. Before connecting  your printer, ensure that 
    your printer supports a netw ork interface by referring 
    to Printer Specifications in the Specifications chapter.
    1Follow the instructions on “Installing Software” on page 27 
    to install the PPD and Filter files on your computer.
    2Open the Applications folder → Utilities, and Print 
    Setup Utility
    .
    • For MAC OS 10.5, open 
    System Preferences from the 
    Applications folder, and click Printer & Fax.
    3Click Add on the Printer List.
    • For MAC OS 10.5, press the “
    +” icon then a display 
    window will pop up. 
    4For MAC OS 10.3, select the IP Printing tab. 
    • For MAC OS 10.4, click 
    IP Printer.
    • For MAC OS 10.5, click 
    IP.
    5Select Socket/HP Jet Direct in Printer Type.
    WHEN PRINTING A DOCUMENT CONTAINING MANY 
    PAGES, PRINTING PERFORMANCE MAY BE 
    ENHANCED BY CHOOSING SOCKET FOR PRINTER 
    TYPE OPTION. 
    6Enter the printer’s IP address in the Printer Address 
    field.
    7Enter the queue name in the Queue Name field. If you 
    cannot determine the queue name for your printer server, 
    try using the default queue first.
    8For MAC OS 10.3, if Auto Select does not work properly, 
    select 
    Dell in Printer Model and your printer name in 
    Model Name. 
    • For MAC OS 10.4, if Auto Se lect does not work properly, 
    select 
    Dell in Print Using and your printer name in 
    Model. 
    • For MAC OS 10.5, if Auto Se lect does not work properly, 
    select 
    Select a driver to use... and your printer name 
    in 
    Print Using. 
    Your printer’s IP address appears on the 
    Printer List, and 
    is set as the default printer.
    9Click Add.
    For a USB-connected
    1Follow the instructions on “Installing Software” on page 27 
    to install the PPD and Filter files on your computer.
    2Open the Applications folder → Utilities, and Print 
    Setup Utility
    .
    • For MAC OS 10.5, open 
    System Preferences from the 
    Applications folder, and click Printer & Fax.
    3Click Add on the Printer List.
    • For MAC OS 10.5, press the “
    +” icon then a display 
    window will pop up. 
    4For MAC OS 10.3, select the USB tab. 
    • For MAC OS 10.4, click 
    Default Browser and find the 
    USB connection.
    • For MAC OS 10.5, click 
    Default and find the USB 
    connection.
    5For MAC OS 10.3, if Auto Select does not work properly, 
    select 
    Dell in Printer Model and your printer name in 
    Model Name. 
    • For MAC OS 10.4, if Auto Select does not work properly,  select 
    Dell in Print Using and your printer name in 
    Model. 
    • For MAC OS 10.5, if Auto Select does not work properly,  select 
    Select a driver to use... and your printer name 
    in 
    Print Using. 
    Your printer appears on the 
    Printer List, and is set as the 
    default printer.
    6Click Add.
