    AcquiringtheRemoteConsole
    WhentheRemoteConsoleAcquiresettingontheRemoteConsoleSettingsscreenisenabled,the
    RemoteConsolepagedisplaystheAcquirebutton.IfyouhaveopenedtheRemoteConsolepage
    andarenotifiedthatanotheruseriscurrentlyusingRemoteConsole,clickingtheAcquirebutton
    endstheotheruser'sRemoteConsolesessionandstartsaRemoteConsolesessioninyourcurrent
    window.

    							WhenyouclickAcquire,youarepromptedtoverifythatyouwanttointerrupttheotheruser's
    RemoteConsolesession.Theotheruserreceivesanotificationthatanotheruserhasacquiredthe
    RemoteConsolesessionafterlosingtheconnection.Nopriorwarningisgiven.Afteryouconfirm
    youwanttoproceedwiththeacquireoperation,youarenotifiedbyanalertwindowthatthe
    operationcouldtake30secondsorlongertocomplete.TheAcquirebuttonbecomesdisabled
    afteritisclickedandtheacquireoperationisstarted.Onbrowsersthatsupportit,thebutton
    changestolightgraytoindicateitisdisabled.Otherbrowsersmightnotvisiblyindicatethatthe
    buttonisdisabled.
    Onlyoneacquirecommandisallowedeveryfiveminutesforallusers.Ifanotheruserhasrecently
    acquiredtheRemoteConsole,clickingtheAcquirebuttoncanresultinapageinformingyouthat
    thefive-minuteacquire-disabledperiodisineffect.Closethewindowandre-launchRemoteConsole
    again.TheAcquirebuttonisdisabledinthenewpageuntiltheacquire-disabledperiodexpires.
    WhentheAcquirebuttonisenabled(thisoperationhappensautomatically,andyoudonothave
    torefreshthepage),youcanattempttoacquiretheRemoteConsolesessionagain.Onbrowsers
    thatsupportit,thebuttonappearslightgraytoindicateitisdisabledduringthisfive-minutetime
    period.Onotherbrowsers,theremaybenovisibleindicationthatthebuttonisdisabled.Therefore
    youdonotreceiveavisualindicationwhenthetimeoutperiodexpires.
    OnlyoneacquireattemptcanbemadeperRemoteConsolesessionwindow.Ifyouhavesuccessfully
    acquiredtheRemoteConsole,andsomeonesubsequentlyacquiresitfromyou,youmustopena
    newRemoteConsolewindowtoattempttoacquiretheRemoteConsolesessionagain.
    RemoteConsole
    RemoteConsoleisaJavaappletthatrenderstheremoteconsolewithbroadbrowsercompatibility
    includingWindowsandLinuxbrowsers.Supportedbrowsersarelistedin“Supportedbrowsers
    andclientoperatingsystems”(page15).RemoteConsoleisalicensedfeatureavailablewiththe
    purchaseofoptionallicenses.Formoreinformation,see“Licensing”(page26).

    							RemoteConsoleusesdualcursorstohelpyoudistinguishbetweenthelocalandremotemouse
    pointers.Theclientcomputer'smousecursorappearsintheRemoteConsoleasacrosshairsymbol.
    Forbestperformance,besuretoconfigurethehostoperatingsystemdisplayasdescribedin
    “Recommendedclientsettings”(page94)and“Recommendedserversettings”(page95).
    Tosynchronizetheremoteandlocalcursorsiftheydriftapart,doonefollowing:
    •Right-click,drag,andmovethelocalcrosshaircursortoalignwiththemousecursorofthe
    remoteserver.
    •PressandholdtherightCtrlkey,andmovethelocalcrosshaircursortoalignwiththemouse
    cursoroftheremoteserver.
    Thelocalcursortakestheshapeoftheremotecursor.Thecursorappearsasasinglecursorifthe
    localcursorandtheremotecursorareperfectlyalignedandthehardwareaccelerationissetto
    Fullonthemanagedserver.
    RemoteConsolefeaturesandcontrols
    TheRemoteConsoleappletcontainsbuttonsthatprovideiLO2withenhancedfeaturesandcontrol.
    Theseoptionsare:
    •RefreshcausesiLO2torefreshthescreen.
    •TerminalSvcslaunchestheMicrosoftTerminalServicesclientinstalledonthesystem.This
    buttonisdeactivatedifTerminalServicesisdisabledorisnotinstalledontheserver.
    •Ctrl-Alt-DelentersthekeysequenceCtrl+Alt+DelintheRemoteConsole.
    •AltLock,whenselected,sendsanykeypressedtotheserverasifyoupressedtheAltkeyand
    anotherkeysimultaneously.
    •CharacterSetchangesthedefaultcharactersetusedbytheRemoteConsole.Modifyingthe
    RemoteConsolecharactersetensuresthecorrectdisplayofcharacters.
    •CloseendstheRemoteConsolesessionandclosestheRemoteConsolewindow.
    Recommendedclientsettings
    Ideally,theremoteserveroperatingsystemdisplayresolutionmustbethesameresolution,or
    smaller,thanthatofthebrowsercomputer.Higherserverresolutionstransmitmoreinformation,
    slowingtheoverallperformance.

    Text-basedremoteconsoleoverview
    iLOanditspredecessorssupportatruetext-basedremoteconsole.Videoinformationisobtained
    fromtheserverandthecontentsofthevideomemoryaresenttothemanagementprocessor,
    compressed,encrypted,andforwardedtothemanagementclientapplication.iLOusesa
    screen-framebuffer,whichdetectschangesintextinformation,encryptsthechanges,andsends
    thecharacters(includingscreenpositioninginformation)totext-basedclientapplications.This
    methodprovidescompatibilitywithstandardtext-basedclients,goodperformance,andsimplicity.
    However,youcannotdisplaynon-ASCIIorgraphicalinformation,andscreenpositioninginformation
    (displayedcharacters)mightbesentoutoforder.
    TheRemoteConsoleusesVirtualKVManddoesnotprovideatruetext-basedconsole.iLO2uses
    thevideoadapterDVOporttoaccessvideomemorydirectly.Thismethodsignificantlyincreases
    iLO2performance.However,thedigitalvideostreamdoesnotcontainusefultextdata.Data
    obtainedfromtheDVOportrepresentsgraphicaldata(non-character-based),andisnot
    comprehensibleASCIIortextdata.Thisvideodatacannotberenderedbyatext-basedclient
    applicationsuchasTelnetorSSH.
    Text-basedconsoleduringPOST
    ThestandardiLO2text-basedremoteconsoleremainsavailableoniLO2untiltheoperatingsystem
    POSTiscomplete.iLO2standardfirmwarecontinuestousethevirtualizedserial-portfunctionality
    ofthemanagementprocessor.OntheiLO2firmware,thevirtualserialportwasrenamedRemote
    SerialConsole.iLO2usestheRemoteSerialConsoletoaccessapre-operatingsystem,text-based

    							remoteconsole.TheiLO2RemoteSerialConsoleappletappearsasatext-basedconsole,butthe
    informationisrenderedusinggraphicalvideodata.iLO2displaysthisinformationthroughthe

    2toobserveandinteractwiththeserverduringPOSTactivities.

    beginstoloadtheoperatingsystem.TouseRemoteConsoleandiLOTextConsoleafterPOST,
    youmusthaveaniLO2AdvancedoriLO2AdvancedforBladeSystem.
    Text-basedconsoleafterPOST
    TheiLO2TextConsoleafterPOSTfeatureisatext-basedconsoleaccessiblefromTelnetorSSH
    afterPOST.WhenusingSSH,thedatastream,includingauthenticationcredentials,isprotected
    bytheencryptionmethodsupportedbytheSSHclientandiLO2.HPrecommendsusingSSHto
    connecttotheiLO2TextConsole.
    iLO2alsosupportsusingTelnettoconnecttotheiLO2TextConsole.However,thedatastream
    isnotencryptedwhenusinganormalTelnetconnection.Aspartofthedefaultsecuritypolicy,
    usingTelnetisdisabled.YoumustenableTelnettoallowaccesstotheCLI,andiLO2TextConsole.

    Virtualserialportandremoteserialconsole
    Themanagementprocessorcontainsserial-porthardwarethatcanreplacethephysicalserialport
    ontheserver'smotherboard.Usinganelectronicswitch,theiLO2firmwaredisconnectstheserver's
    physicalserialportandcommandsitsownserial-porthardwaretoconnect.TheiLO2serial-port
    hardwareestablishesaconnectionbetweentheserverandthemanagementprocessornetwork.
    Thefirmwareencapsulatesthecharacterssentbytheservertotheserialportintonetworkpackets
    andsendsthenetworkpacketstotheremoteserialconsoleappletorapplication(theapplication
    canbeaTelnetorSSHclient).Characterssentbytheremoteappletorapplicationareencapsulated
    intonetworkpacketsandsenttotheiLO2firmware,whichthenextractsthecharactersandfeeds
    themtotheserver.TheiLO2remoteserialconsoleprovidesabi-directionalserialcommunication
    pathbetweentheremoteuserandtheserver.

    Consoleenablesyoutoexchangetextdatawiththehost.TheRemoteSerialConsoleoptionis
    compatiblewithbothWindowsandLinuxhostoperatingsystemsandrequiresJVM.
    Theflowofdataisabi-directionalstreamsenttotheserverserialport.Threetypesofdatacan
    appearonaHPProLiantserverserialport:

    TosuccessfullyusetheRemoteSerialConsole,theserversoftwareandfirmwaremustbeconfigured
    correctly.ToconfiguretheserverPOSTfirmware,theserverSystemRBSUmustbeinvokedtoset
    theserialportparameters.YoumustconfiguretheRBSUtoenableBIOSSerialConsoleRedirection
