    Focus range
    When a subject is too close to the camera, the picture may not be properly focused.
    The shortest recording distance differs depending on the zoom ratio and [Focus] setting.
     ■Shortest recording distance
    The shortest recording distance is the distance from the lens front to the subject.  This 
    distance changes gradually depending on the zoom position.

    [Macro Zoom]
    To take even larger images of the subject, setting to [Macro Zoom] () enables the 
    subject to appear even larger than when using [AF Macro] ().
    Press [AF/AF/MF]
    Press   to select [Macro Zoom] () and press [MENU/SET]
    Adjust the magnification with the zoom lever
     • The zoom position is fixed at the Wide end. Focus range is 1 cm (0.033   feet) - .

    Manual Focus is convenient when you want to lock the focus to take pictures or when it is 
    difficult to adjust focus using Auto Focus.
    Press [AF/AF/MF]
    Press   to select [MF] and press [MENU/SET]

    Press the rear dial to set [MF] to a selected state
     • Enabled operation will switch every time the rear dial is pressed.
    Rotate the rear dial to focus on the subject
    Focus range
     • Using the cursor button is recommended when making slight adjustments. • When you stop operating the focus adjustment, the focus range will disappear after a few seconds.
     ●After you use the zoom function or cancel [Sleep Mode], adjust the focus again. ●The focus range displayed by Manual Focus is a reference value. Confirm the focus 
    on the screen ([MF Assist] screen).

     ■MF assist
    When [MF Assist] in the [Setup] menu is [ON] and you perform the Manual Focus 
    operation, an enlarged display appears.
     • Shortly after you stop operating Manual Focus, the display switches to normal.
     ●To change the position of an enlarged display   Press [MENU/SET] while MF assist is displayed   Press     to move the enlarged display • The magnification of the enlarged area can be changed by pressing the rear dial when MF 
    Assist is activated or the MF area is moving.

     ●The MF Assist is disabled in the Digital Zoom range or when recording motion 
    pictures.
     ●The MF Area position is retained even after the unit is turned off.
    Technique for Manual Focus
      Focus by rotating the rear dial  Press the cursor button a few times furthermore in the same direction  Finely focus on the subject by pressing the cursor button in reverse
     ■Prefocus
    This is a technique for focusing in advance on the point the pictures will be taken 
    when it is difficult to focus on the subject with Auto Focus due to its quick motion. (e.g. 
    [Panning] in Scene Mode)
    This function is suitable when the distance between the camera and the subject is 
    certain.
     ■One shot AF
    You can focus on the subject with Auto Focus by pressing [FOCUS] button during 
    Manual Focus. This is convenient for prefocus.

    The AF/AE Lock function is convenient, for example, when there is too much contrast with 
    the subject and you cannot get appropriate exposure (AE Lock) or when you want to take 
    a still picture composed with the subject outside the AF area (AF Lock).
    Align the AF area with the subject
    Press [AF/AE LOCK (Fn1)] button to lock the focus and/or 
    exposure
     • To cancel AF/AE Lock → Press [AF/AE LOCK (Fn1)] button
    Move the camera to compose the still picture you want to take, 
    and press the shutter button fully
     • When AE is set, press the shutter button halfway to focus, then press it fully. display

     ■AF/AE Lock switching
    By using [AF/AE Lock] in the recording menu, you can set whether to lock focus and/or 
    exposure.
    [AF]Only the focus is locked. • [AFL] is displayed when the subject comes into focus.
    [AE] Only the exposure is locked.
     • [AEL], aperture value, and shutter speed are displayed when the exposure is 
    adjusted.
    [AF/AE] Both focus and exposure are locked.
     • [AFL], [AEL], aperture value and shutter speed are displayed when the focus and 
    the exposure are optimized.
     ●To use as the [AF/AE LOCK] button, set [AF/AE LOCK / Fn1] in the [Setup] menu to 
    [AF/AE LOCK].  (→62)
     ●AF Lock only is effective in the following cases. • [Manual Exposure] Mode • [Panorama Shot] Mode • [Scene Mode] ●During Manual Focus, only AE Lock can be used. ●Lock is canceled when zooming is performed after locking.  ●When AE lock is performed, the brightness of the recording screen that appears on 
    the LCD monitor/Viewfinder is fixed.
     ●Under [Program AE] Mode, program shift can be operated even after AE Lock is set. ●About recording motion pictures • Lock is released when recording motion picture is started except when recording in 
    [Creative V
    ideo Mode].
     • Under [Creative V
    
    ideo Mode], lock is also effective during motion picture recording. 
    (However, lock is released when zoom operation is performed).
     • Lock operations cannot be performed during motion picture recording.

    When recording, you can control the aperture value to meet your recording purposes.
    Shutter speed is automatically adjusted to be appropriate for the set aperture value.

     • When the aperture value is increased, the range of depth in focus expands, and the picture shows up clearly from the position of the camera to the background.
     • When the aperture value is reduced, the range of depth in focus shrinks, and the background can get blurry

    for the aperture value and shutter speed are shown in red.
     ●The brightness of the LCD monitor/Viewfinder and the recorded pictures may differ. 
    Check the pictures on the playback screen.
     ●Set the aperture value to a higher number when the subject is too bright. Set the 
    aperture value to a lower number when the subject is too dim.
     ●The lower limit of shutter speed differs depending on ISO Sensitivity.

     ●Display of the shutter speed will count down when the shutter speed is set to slow and 
    the shutter button is pressed all the way. (Depending on shutter speed settings, count 
    down for processing may be displayed again after this.)
     ●We recommend using a tripod when the shutter speed is slow. ●The [Sensitivity] is automatically set to [AUTO] when you switch the Recording Mode 
    to Shutter-Priority AE Mode while the [Sensitivity] is set to [

    You can use this recording mode to set the desired shutter speed and aperture value 
    when you want to take pictures using the same exposure (same combination of shutter 
    speed and aperture value) or when you cannot obtain pictures at the desired brightness 
    even after compensating the exposure.

    Rotate the rear dial to set the aperture and shutter speed
     • It will switch between aperture setting operation and shutter speed setting operation every time the rear dial is pressed.
