    26 Vehicle Data

    							Other important vehicle data labels can be found on the drivers door, near the latch
    The vehicle data appears on the Safety Compliance Certification Label on the second and third lines following
    the identification number. The code set (two numbers or a number and letter) above COLOR identify the
    exterior paint color, with two sets of codes designating two tone paint. The three digits under W.N. designate
    the wheelbase in inches. The letter and three digits under TYPE/G.V.W. designate the truck model within a
    series and the gross vehicle weight rating. The letters and/or numbers under BODY designate the interior trim,
    seat and body type. The transmission installed in the vehicle is identified under TRANS by an alphabetical
    code.
    A letter and a number or two numbers under AXLE identify the rear axle ratio and, when required, a letter or
    number is also stamped after the rear axle code to identify the front axle. The letters and/or numerals under
    TAPE designate the external body side tape stripe code. The spring usage codes for the vehicle are identified
    under SPRING.
    A two digit number is stamped above D.S.O. to identify the district which originally ordered the vehicle. If
    the vehicle is built to special order (Domestic Special Order, Foreign Special Order, Limited Production
    Option or other special order), the complete order number will also appear above D.S.O. HOW TO USE THIS BOOK

    Emission Calibration Label

    The emission calibration number label is attached to the left side door or the left door post pillar. This label
    plate identifies the engine calibration number, engine code number and the revision level. These numbers are
    used to determine if parts are unique to specific engines. The engine codes and calibration are necessary for
    ordering parts and asking questions related to the engine. HOW TO USE THIS BOOK

    Engine
    The engine identification code is a letter located in the eighth digit of the Vehicle Identification Number
    stamped on a metal tab that is riveted to the instrument panel close to the windshield. Specific engine data is
    located on a label attached to the timing cover.
    Transmission
    The transmission code may be found in two places on the vehicle. One is on the Safety Standard Certification
    label attached to the left drivers side door lock post. The code appears as a letter in the Trans column of the
    label.
    M or D = 5-speed manual transmission
    T = 4-speed automatic transmission (A4LD/4R44E/4R55E)
    U = 4-speed automatic transmission (4R70W)
    D = 5-speed automatic transmission (5R55E)
    The other location is on the transmission body itself. On manual transmissions, the identification number is
    located on a plate attached to the main transmission case. On the plate you find Fords assigned part number,
    the serial number and a bar code used for inventory purposes. On automatic transmissions, the identification
    number is stamped on plate that hangs from the lower left extension housing bolt. The plate identifies when
    the transmission was built, its code letter and model number.
    There were two types of manual transmissions used from 1991-99: the Misubishi 5-speed, and the
    Mazda M5OD. The Mitsubishi 5-speed was only used on 1991-92 4X4 Rangers with the 2.9L engine.
    All other applications used the M5OD transmission.
    Transfer Case
    All vehicles can be equipped with a mechanical or electronic shift transfer case. The identification number is
    stamped on a plate on the side of the case.
    Front Drive Axle
    The front drive axle on the Ranger, Explorer and Mountaineer can be either the Dana 28 series, or the Dana 35
    series. However, there are two versions of the Dana 35 and while both are an Independent Front Suspension
    (IFS) axles, their differences are drastic. The Mountaineer, 1995-99 Explorers and 1998-99 Ranger use a
    centrally mounted front differential with unequal length upper and lower control arms and front axle
    half-shafts. All other models use the twin I-beam style front axle assembly. The identification number is
    stamped on a plate on the differential housing.
    Rear Axle
    The rear axle code may be found in two places on the vehicle. One is on the Safety Standard Certification
    label attached to the left drivers side door lock post. The code appears as a number or letter/number HOW TO USE THIS BOOK

    combination in the Axle column of the label. The rear axle identification code is also stamped on a metal tag
    hanging from the axle cover-to-carrier bolt at the 2 oclock position in the cover bolt circle.
