3. Recording Modes 92 Taking Pictures with Automatically Adjusted Aperture and Shutter Speed (Program AE Mode) Recording Mode: The camera automatically sets the shutter speed and the aperture value according to the brightness of the subject. You can take pictures with greater freedom by changing various settings in the [Rec] menu. 1Set the mode dial to [ ]. 2Press the shutter button halfway and display the aperture value and shutter speed value on the screen. A Aperture value B Shutter speed •If the exposure is not adequate when the shutter button is pres sed halfway, the aperture value and shutter speed turn red and blink. 989898606060 3.53.53.52000989898 BA

93 3. Recording Modes In Program AE Mode, you can change the preset aperture value and shutter speed without changing the exposure. This is called Program Shift. You can make the background more blurred by decreasing the aperture value or record a moving subject more dynamically by slowing the shutter speed when taking a picture in Program AE Mode. 1Press the shutter button halfway and display the aperture value and shutter speed value on the screen. 2While the values are displayed (about 10 seconds), perform Program Shift by rotating the rear dial or front dial. A Program Shift indication•To cancel Program Shift, turn off this unit or rotate the front/rear dial until the Program Shift indication disappears. Program Shift can easily be canceled by setting a function butt on to [One Push AE]. 95 3. Recording Modes Taking Pictures by Specifying the Aperture/ Shutter Speed Recording Mode: • The effects of the set aperture value and shutter speed will not be visible on the recording screen. To check on the recording screen, please use [Preview]. (P100) •The brightness of the screen and the recorded pictures may diff er. Check the pictures on the playback screen. When you set the aperture value, the camera automatically optim izes the shutter speed for the brightness of the subject. Set the aperture value to a higher number when you want a sharp focus background. Set the aperture value to a lower number when you want a soft focus background. 1Set the mode dial to [ ]. 2Set the aperture value by rotating the rear dial or the front dial. AAperture value B Exposure meter •Rotate the front/rear dial to display the Exposure Meter. Unsui table areas of the range are displayed in red. •If the exposure is not adequate, the aperture value and the shutter speed turn red and blink when the shutter button is pressed halfway. •When using a lens having an aperture ring, set the position of the aperture ring to [A] to activate the front/rear dial settings. At positions other than [A], the ring setting takes priority. 3. Recording Modes 96 When you set the shutter speed, the camera automatically optimizes the aperture value for the brightness of the subject. When you want to take a sharp picture of a fast moving subject, set with a faster shutter speed. When you want to create a trail effect, set to a slower shutter speed. 1Set the mode dial to [ ]. 2Set the shutter speed by rotating the rear dial or the front dial. 3. Recording Modes 98 Optimizing the ISO sensitivity for the shutter speed and aperture value When the ISO sensitivity is set to [AUTO], the camera sets the ISO sensitivity automatically so that the exposure will be appropriate for the shutter speed and aperture value. • Depending on recording conditions, an appropriate exposure may not be set or the ISO sensitivity may become higher. Manual Exposure Assistance • The Manual Exposure Assistance is an approximation. We recommen d checking the pictures on the playback screen. ∫ About [B] (Bulb) If you set the shutter speed to [B], the shutter stays open whi le the shutter button is pressed fully (up to approximately 120 seconds). The shutter closes if you release the shutter button. Use this when you want to keep the shutter open for a long time to take pictures of fireworks, a night scene etc. • If you set the shutter speed to [B], [B] is displayed on the sc reen.•When you take pictures with the shutter speed set to [B], use a sufficiently charged battery. (P24) •The Manual Exposure Assistance does not appear.•This function is not available when using the electronic shutte r.•It can only be used with Manual Exposure Mode. The exposure is adequate. Set to faster shutter speed or larger aperture value. Set to slower shutter speed or smaller aperture value. •We recommend using a tripod or the shutter remote control (DMW- RSL1: optional) when you take pictures with the shutter speed set to [B]. Refer to P363 for information about the shutter remote control. •When you take pictures with the shutter speed set to [B ], noise may become visible. To avoid picture noise, we recomm end setting [Long Shtr NR] in the [Rec] menu to [ON] before taking pictures. (P145) 0 0 0 3030 0 0 0µ3µ3

3. Recording Modes 100 Applicable modes: The effects of aperture and shutter speed can be checked by using the Preview Mode. • Confirm the effects of aperture: You can check the depth of field (effective focus range) before taking a picture by closing the leaf shutter to the aper ture value you set. •Confirm the effects of shutter speed: Movement can be confirmed by displaying the actual picture that will be taken with that shutter speed. When the shutter speed is set for high speed, display in the sh utter speed preview will be displayed like a time-release film. It is used in cases such as stopping the movement of running water. 1Set a function button to [Preview].
