    TheHPiLOsubsystemisastandardcomponentofHPProLiantserversthatsimplifiesinitialserver
    setup,serverhealthmonitoring,powerandthermaloptimization,andremoteserveradministration.
    TheHPiLOsubsystemincludesanintelligentmicroprocessor,securememory,andadedicated
    networkinterface.ThisdesignmakesHPiLOindependentofthehostserveranditsoperating
    system.
    HPiLOenablesandmanagestheActiveHealthSystemandalsofeaturesAgentlessManagement.
    HPiLOmonitorsallkeyinternalsubsystems.Whenenabled,SNMPalertsaresentdirectlybyHP
    iLO,regardlessofthehostoperatingsystemorwhetherahostoperatingsystemisinstalled.
    EmbeddedremotesupportsoftwareisavailableonHPProLiantGen8andGen9serverswithiLO

    PreparingtosetupiLO
    BeforesettingupaniLOmanagementprocessor,youmustdecidehowtohandlenetworkingand
    security.ThefollowingquestionscanhelpyouconfigureiLO:
    HowshouldiLOconnecttothenetwork?
    Foragraphicalrepresentationandexplanationoftheavailableconnections,see“ConnectingiLO

    Typically,iLOisconnectedtothenetworkthroughoneofthefollowing:
    •AcorporatenetworkthatboththeNICandtheiLOportareconnectedto.Thisconnection
    enablesaccesstoiLOfromanywhereonthenetworkandreducestheamountofnetworking
    hardwareandinfrastructurerequiredtosupportiLO.However,onacorporatenetwork,traffic
    canhinderiLOperformance.
    •AdedicatedmanagementnetworkwiththeiLOportonaseparatenetwork.Aseparate
    networkimprovesperformanceandsecuritybecauseyoucanphysicallycontrolwhich
    workstationsareconnectedtothenetwork.Aseparatenetworkalsoprovidesredundantaccess
    totheserverifahardwarefailureoccursonthecorporatenetwork.Inthisconfiguration,iLO
    cannotbeaccesseddirectlyfromthecorporatenetwork.

    							HowwilliLOacquireanIPaddress?
    ToaccessiLOafterconnectingittothenetwork,theiLOmanagementprocessormustacquirean
    IPaddressandsubnetmaskbyusingeitheradynamicorstaticprocess.
    •AdynamicIPaddressissetbydefault.iLOobtainstheIPaddressandsubnetmaskfromDNS
    orDHCPservers.Thismethodisthesimplest.
    •AstaticIPaddressisusedifDNSorDHCPserversarenotavailableonthenetwork.Astatic
    IPaddresscanbeconfiguredbyusingiLORBSUortheiLO4ConfigurationUtility.Formore

    IMPORTANT:IfyouplantouseastaticIPaddress,youmusthavetheIPaddressbefore

    Whataccesssecurityisrequired,andwhatuseraccountsandprivilegesare
    needed?
    iLOprovidesseveraloptionstocontroluseraccess.Useoneofthefollowingmethodstoprevent

    environmentswithalargenumberofusers.Ifyouplantousedirectoryservices,consider
    enablingatleastonelocaladministratoraccountforalternateaccess.

    HowdoyouwanttoconfigureiLO?
    iLOsupportsvariousinterfacesforconfigurationandoperation.Thisguidediscussesthefollowing
