    Usingthetext-basedRemoteConsole
    iLOsupportsatruetext-basedRemoteConsole.Videoinformationisobtainedfromtheserver,and
    thecontentsofthevideomemoryaresenttotheiLOmanagementprocessor,compressed,encrypted,
    andforwardedtothemanagementclientapplication.iLOusesascreen-framebufferthatsends
    thecharacters(includingscreenpositioninginformation)totext-basedclientapplications.This
    methodensurescompatibilitywithstandardtext-basedclients,goodperformance,andsimplicity.
    However,youcannotdisplaynon-ASCIIorgraphicalinformation,andscreenpositioninginformation
    (displayedcharacters)mightbesentoutoforder.
    iLOusesthevideoadapterDVOporttoaccessvideomemorydirectly.ThismethodincreasesiLO
    performancesignificantly.However,thedigitalvideostreamdoesnotcontainusefultextdata.
    Thisdatacannotberenderedbyatext-basedclientapplicationsuchasSSH.
    Therearetwotext-basedconsoleoptions,asdescribedinthefollowingsections:
    •“UsingtheiLOVirtualSerialPort”(page212)
    •“UsingtheText-basedRemoteConsole(Textcons)”(page222)
    UsingtheiLOVirtualSerialPort
    Youcanaccessatext-basedconsolefromiLOusingastandardlicenseandtheiLOVirtualSerial
    Port.
    TheiLOVirtualSerialPortisonetypeofiLOtext-basedremoteconsole.TheiLOVirtualSerialPort
    givesyouabidirectionaldataflowwithaserverserialport.Usingtheremoteconsole,youcan
    operateasifaphysicalserialconnectionexistsontheremoteserverserialport.
    TheiLOVirtualSerialPortisdisplayedasatext-basedconsole,buttheinformationisrendered
    throughgraphicalvideodata.iLOdisplaysthisinformationthroughanSSHclientwhentheserver
    isinapre-operating-systemstate,enablinganonlicensediLOtoobserveandinteractwiththe
    serverduringPOSTactivities.
    ByusingtheiLOVirtualSerialPort,theremoteusercanperformoperationssuchasthefollowing:
    •InteractwiththeserverPOSTsequenceandtheoperatingsystembootsequence.

    							IMPORTANT:TostartiLORBSUduringaVirtualSerialPortsession,enterthekeycombination
    ESC+8.
    TostarttheUEFISystemUtilitiesduringaVirtualSerialPortsession,enterthekeycombination
    ESC+9.
    •Establishaloginsessionwiththeoperatingsystem,interactwiththeoperatingsystem;and
    executeandinteractwithapplicationsontheoperatingsystem.
    •ForaniLOrunningLinuxinagraphicalformat,youcanconfiguregetty()ontheserver
    serialport,andthenusetheiLOVirtualSerialPorttoviewaloginsessiontotheLinuxoperating
    system.Formoreinformation,see“ConfiguringtheiLOVirtualSerialPortforLinux”(page219).
    •UsetheEMSConsolethroughtheiLOVirtualSerialPort.EMSisusefulfordebuggingWindows
    bootissuesandkernel-levelissues.Formoreinformation,see“ConfiguringtheiLOVirtual
    SerialPortfortheWindowsEMSConsole”(page220).
    ConfiguringtheiLOVirtualSerialPortinthehostsystemRBSU
    ThefollowingproceduredescribesthesettingsyoumustconfigurebeforeyoucanusetheiLO
    VirtualSerialPort.ThisprocedureisrequiredforbothWindowsandLinuxsystems.
    ThisprocedureisforsystemsthatsupportthelegacysystemRBSU.Forsystemsthatsupportthe
    UEFISystemUtilities,see“ConfiguringtheiLOVirtualSerialPortintheUEFISystemUtilities”(page
    216).

    takeeffect.
    19.PressEnter.
    iLOresets,andtheremoteconsolesessionisautomaticallyended.Youcanreconnectin
    approximately30seconds.
    20.Resumethenormalbootprocess:
    a.StarttheiLOremoteconsole.
    TheiLO4ConfigurationUtilityisstillopenfromtheprevioussession.
    b.PressESCseveraltimestonavigatetotheSystemConfigurationpage.
    c.PressESCtoexittheSystemUtilitiesandresumethenormalbootprocess.
    ConfiguringtheiLOVirtualSerialPortforLinux
    YoucanmanageLinuxserversremotelyusingconsoleredirection.ToconfigureLinuxtouseconsole
    redirection,youmustconfiguretheLinuxbootloader(GRUB).Theboot-loaderapplicationloads
    fromthebootabledevicewhentheserversystemROMfinishesPOST.Definetheserialinterface

    port,addthefollowinglinetothe/etc/inittabfiletostarttheloginprocessautomatically
    duringsystemboot.

    iLOenablesyoutousetheWindowsEMSConsoleoverthenetworkthroughawebbrowser.EMS
    enablesyoutoperformemergencymanagementserviceswhenvideo,devicedrivers,orother
    operatingsystemfeaturespreventnormaloperationandnormalcorrectiveactionsfrombeing
    performed.
    WhenusingtheWindowsEMSConsolewithiLO,notethefollowing:
    •YoumustconfiguretheWindowsEMSconsolewithintheoperatingsystembeforeyoucan
    usetheiLOVirtualSerialPort.ForinformationabouthowtoenabletheEMSconsole,see
    youroperatingsystemdocumentation.IftheEMSconsoleisnotenabledintheoperating
    system,iLOdisplaysanerrormessagewhenyoutrytoaccesstheiLOVirtualSerialPort.
    •TheWindowsEMSserialportmustbeenabledthroughthehostsystemRBSUortheUEFI
    SystemUtilities.TheconfigurationallowsyoutoenableordisabletheEMSport,andselect
    theCOMport.iLOautomaticallydetectswhethertheEMSportisenabledordisabled,and
    detectstheselectionoftheCOMport.FormoreinformationaboutenablingtheWindows
    EMSserialport,see“ConfiguringtheiLOVirtualSerialPortinthehostsystemRBSU”(page213)
    or“ConfiguringtheiLOVirtualSerialPortintheUEFISystemUtilities”(page216).
