    lever while driving; pressure
    transmitted from your hand may
cause premature wear to the gear
    selector mechanism.
Your vehicle is equipped with an
aluminium shift lever. If you leave
the vehicle parked outside f or a long
time on a hot day, be caref ul bef ore
moving the shift lever. Because of
the heat, the shift lever may be
    extremely hot. If the outside
temperature is low, the shif t lever
f eels cold. When slowing down, you can get
extra braking f rom the engine by
shifting to a lower gear. This extra
braking can help you maintain a safe
speed and prevent your brakes f rom
    overheating while going down a
steep hill. Bef ore downshif ting,
make sure the engine speed will not
go into the tachometer’s red zone in
the lower gear. Ref er to the
    maximum allowable speeds charts.

    Rapid slowing or speeding-
up can cause loss of control
    on slippery surfaces. If you
    crash, you can be injured.
    Use extra care when driving
    on slippery surfaces.

you may f eel the engine cut in and

The shif t indicator guides shif t
timing of the gear when you would
like to achieve good f uel ef f iciency.
Better f uel economy will be obtained,
if you change the gear when the
shif t indicator is on, and then you
    operate the accelerator with the
ECO indicator on (see page ).If there is a problem with the shif t up
or down indication system, both of
the shif t up and shif t down indicators
will not come on. Have your vehicle
inspected by your dealer. Road and traffic conditions may
require you to shif t at times other
than those indicated. This indicator will not prompt to

to downshif t to f irst gear to increase
    engine braking. Avoid sudden engine
    braking.
When the shif t indicator comes on,
the ECO indicator will turn off.
Shif ting when prompted by the shif t
    indicator, the ECO indicator will
show the current f uel economy.
The shif t down indicator prompts
you to shif t to a lower gear according
to your acceleration when you are

If you need to use this procedure to
shif t to reverse, your vehicle may be
    developing a problem. Have it
checked by your dealer. The manual transmission has
    lockout so you cannot accidentally
shif t f rom any f orward gear to

f ew seconds when you turn the
ignition switch to the ON (II)

    possible problem in the transmission.
If the malf unction indicator lamp

    automatic transmission control
    system. Avoid rapid acceleration, and
    have the transmission checked by

When the ‘‘D’’ indicator warns of a

notice the transmission shif ting up at
    higher engine speeds when the

similar to D, except only the f irst
three gears are selected. Use D
when towing a trailer in hilly terrain,
