    							To deactivate the lockable retractor
and remove a child restraint system,
unlatch the buckle, unroute the seat
belt, and let the belt f ully retract.
Push and pull the child restraint
    system f orward and f rom side-to-
side to verify that it is secure
    enough to stay upright during
    normal driving manoeuvres. If the
    child restraint system is not
secure, unlatch the belt, allow it to
retract f ully, then repeat these
    steps.When not using the lower
    anchorages system, all child
restraint systems must be secured to
the vehicle with the lap part of a lap/
    shoulder belt.
To properly route a lap/shoulder belt
    through a child restraint system,
f ollow the restraint system maker’s
    instructions.
The procedures in the f ollowing
pages are described based on a f ront
f acing child restraint system. For EU countries, ref er to page

Place the child restraint system in
    the desired back seating position.
Make sure the child restraint is
positioned well back in the seat-

    Route the belt through the
    restraint according to the restraint
    system maker’s instructions, then
insert the latch plate into the
buckle.Push down the tab. Route the
shoulder part of the belt into the
slit at the side of the restraint.Grab the shoulder part of the belt
near the buckle, and pull up to
remove any slack from the lap part
of the belt. Remember, if the lap
part of the belt is not tight, the
child restraint system will not be
    secure.
To remove slack, it may help to
put weight on the child restraint
system, or push on the back of the
    restraint system while pulling up

To install a locking clip, do the
    f ollowing:
Place the child restraint in the seat
with a lap/shoulder belt. Route the
    lap/shoulder belt through the
    restraint according to the seat
    manuf acturer’s instructions.
Insert the latch plate into the
buckle. Pull on the shoulder part
    of thebelttomakesurethereis
no slack in the lap portion.
Tightly grasp the belt near the
latch plate. Pinch both parts of the
belt together so they won’t slip
    through the latch plate. Unbuckle
the seat belt.Install the locking clip as shown.
Position the clip as close as
    possible to the latch plate.
If it is necessary to put a f ront f acing
child restraint system in the f ront,
move the vehicle seat as far to the
rear as possible, be sure the child
restraint system is f irmly secured to
the vehicle, and the child is properly
strapped in the restraint system (see
page ). A locking clip is usually included
with the child restraint system. If
you need a clip, contact the seat’s

when you secure a child restraint
system to your vehicle with a lap/
shoulder belt. This helps prevent the
restraint system f rom shif ting
    position or overturning.

Children riding in vehicles should be
restrained to minimize the risk of
injury in the event of an accident.Since a tether can provide additional
    security to the lap/shoulder belt
    installation, we recommend using a
tether whenever one is required or
    available. (The owners may check

Allowing a child age 12 or

If a child must ride in front,

the child sit up properly and
wear the seat belt properly.Leaning over the front door

For EU countries, ref er to page
fortheboosterseatplacement. A child may continue using a booster
seat until the tops of their ears are
even with the top of the vehicle’s or
    booster’s seat-back. A child of this
height should be tall enough to use
    the lap/shoulder belt without a
booster seat. If a child who uses a booster seat
must ride in f ront, move the vehicle
seat as far back as possible and be
sure the child is wearing the seat
belt properly. Booster seats can be high-back or
    low-back. Whichever style you select,
make sure the booster seat meets
approved saf ety standards (see page
) and that you f ollow the booster
    seat maker’s instructions.
A child who has outgrown a f ront
f acing child restraint system should
ride in a back seat and use a booster
seat until the lap/shoulder belt f its
them properly without the booster. Does the shoulder belt cross
between the child’s neck and arm?
Is the lap part of the belt as low as
    possible, touching the child’s
    thighs?
Will the child be able to stay
seated like this f or the whole trip?
If you answer yes to all these
questions, the child is ready to wear
    the lap/shoulder belt correctly. If
you answer no to any question, the
child needs to ride on a booster seat.

Of course, children vary widely. And
while age may be one indicator of
when a child can saf ely ride in f ront,
there are other important f actors you
    should consider.
Physically, a child must be large
enough f or the lap/shoulder belt to
properly f it (see pages and ). If
the seat belt does not f it properly,
with or without the child sitting on a
booster seat, the child should not sit
    in f ront.
To saf ely ride in f ront, a child must
be able to f ollow the rules, including
sitting properly, and wearing the seat
belt properly throughout a ride. If your vehicle is equipped with the
side airbag, it also poses risks. If any
part of a larger child’s body is in the
path of a deploying side airbag, the
    child could receive possibly serious
injuries. If the passenger’s f ront airbag
inf lates in a moderate to severe
f rontal collision, the airbag can cause
serious injuries to a child who is
    unrestrained, improperly restrained,
sitting too close to the airbag, or out
of position. The back seat is the saf est place f or
a child of any age or size. It is recommended that all children
age 12 and under be properly
    restrained in the back seat.
    A back-rest may be available for a
specif ic booster seat. Install the
back-rest to the booster seat and
adjust it to the vehicle seat according
    to the booster seat maker’s
instructions. Make sure the seat belt
is properly routed through the guide
at the shoulder of the back-rest and
the belt does not touch and cross the
    child’s neck (see page ).17 61

    							Devices intended to
improve a child’s comf ort or
reposition the shoulder part of a
seat belt can make the belt less
ef f ective and increase the chance
of serious injury in a crash. This could result
in serious neck injuries during a
    crash.
    This could
    cause very serious injuries during
a crash. It also increases the
chance that the child will slide
under the belt in a crash and be
    injured.
    If they do, they
could be very seriously injured in a
crash. If you decide that a child can saf ely
ride up f ront, be sure to:
Caref ully read the owner’s manual,
and make sure you understand all
seat belt instructions and all saf ety
    inf ormation.
Move the vehicle seat to the rear-
    most position.
Have the child sit up straight, back
against the seat, and feet on or
    near the f loor.
Check that the child’s seat belt is
    properly and securely positioned.
Remind the child not to lean
    toward the door.
Supervise the child. Even a mature
    child sometimes needs to be
reminded to f asten the seat belt or
    sit properly.
